They arrived right before spring break so several students were able to borrow some reading material for that week away from school. And since then a kind of informal network of students passing the books amongst themselves has developed and a few of my ninth graders are keeping track to see who can read the entire cabinet of manga first.\r\n\r\nOne expected but nonetheless pleasant result is that some students are taking a look at the neighboring cabinets and borrowing novels. Or grabbing one of the massive tomes for a Marvel or DC omnibus from DonorsChoose of years past. And a few students have applied for their library card because I've made sure to talk that up a lot if they were excited about these books then oh my are they in for a treat.\r\n\r\nAn unexpected result is that some students have donated books! They really want to be part of something and contribute to a library for all. Jalen Rose Leadership Academy plans to expand soon and a new building is being renovated. I hope we will have a true media center unlike in our current building and that I can donate all of these books plus many more when that day arrives to officially create a manga and comic library that endures for years to come.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping to plant these seeds! Unrelated but a friend recently donated some Shonen Jump to us (real classic stuff from the early 2000s) and it was very cool to get to explain how the Japanese manga industry works with weekly/monthly books that later get compiled into the little books the students are most familiar with reading.","fullyFundedDate":1773862297840,"projectUrl":"project/updating-class-library-with-student-sele/10065039/","projectTitle":"Updating Class Library With Student-Selected Comics, Manga, and Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Brock","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2116970_orig.jpg?crop=864,864,x184,y128&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1695949499237","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2116970"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_101965","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":420,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":99,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":42.2,"schoolId":101965,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jalen Rose Leadership Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jalen Rose Leadership Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/michigan-department-of-education/jalen-rose-leadership-academy/101965"}
