I teach US History and Civics in Detroit. The character limit prevents me from describing all the nuances of where my students are and what they need. In terms of academic abilities, I have a student who will go on to be a brilliant doctor and I have a student who reads at a first grade level. In terms of motivation, I have students who stand by my side as leaders and exemplars then I have students who will never attempt any work no matter how much I beg or modify. Everyone else falls somewhere between those extremes but with most falling somewhere far from where I want them to be at this point in their education. The curriculum I am developing revolves around use of our class website and efforts to get students directing their own independent learning. Students are meant to be participating in a process where I support them in revising their efforts, refining their research, and then asking even more questions about the significance of what they're learning.
