We immediately put the new shelf to use to organize therapy materials and make them accessible to the students. One thing we work on a lot, especially with students that are limited verbally, is requesting desired items. Having them be accessible and organized is super important. The crash pad was a huge hit, with my students, and all other preschoolers that use the sensory room space. Getting deep pressure through crashing into a safe, soft, pad has been so useful for our students that seek that type of sensory input to them regulate themselves. Children that are regulated are able to learn and engage. The sand/light tray has been very popular, especially with several of my autistic students. They really enjoy the texture of the sand and the changing lights. Being a quiet activity, it also helps children calm and regulate their nervous systems. Again, being in a regulated state promotes learning and communication. Drawing in the sand has also provided some great communication opportunities.
