The books give students opportunities to explore new topics, learn new vocabulary, build reading fluency, and strengthen their comprehension skills. As we read together, we practice making predictions, asking and answering questions, identifying characters and settings, understanding story problems, and making connections to what we already know. We also talk about the lessons we can learn from stories and how characters work through challenges.\r\n\r\nReading is a big part of our day in Room 200. Students enjoy listening to read-alouds, exploring books with partners, reading independently, and sharing their favorite parts with classmates. We work on becoming stronger readers while also building a love of reading. I love seeing students get excited about a book, discover a new favorite author, or ask if they can keep reading when it is time to move on!\r\n\r\nSomething especially meaningful is seeing children recognize themselves in the characters and illustrations. For example, some of my students have been excited to see characters with features like their own, including children with beautiful curly hair. Those moments matter! Children deserve to see themselves represented in the books they read and to know that their stories, families, and experiences belong on our classroom bookshelves. It also gives all of our students opportunities to see and appreciate people and experiences different from their own.\r\n\r\nThank you to our donors for helping make these experiences possible.
