First, we started with learning how to cast in the gym towards the middle with fake fish. Our 3rd graders were so excited for each other when they \"hooked\" a fish! Those that had some fishing experience rose to the occasion and were amazing teachers to their peers, helping with casting, reeling, holding the pole correctly and untangling fishing lines. It was so heartwarming to see students who normally don't \"shine\" in PE show their classmates how skilled they were at fishing. \r\nThen we went on our field trip to a historical village that included a fishable pond. The day was wonderful - SUCH excitement in catching fish, the possibility of bringing in a fish, seeing the fish near their bait, witnessing a beaver swim under the dock, keeping track of a turtle and even catching it on the fishing line (making sure we got him back to the pond safely)! The enjoyment of the sport of fishing, the thrill of nature and the camaraderie of being with friends and family made this project more worthwhile than words can express!
