They were so excited to use the parachute they could not be contained! I did have a usable parachute all last school year, so the students were sad, as well as myself. I was sad because a parachute is vital for elementary Physical Education classes to teach the students in a fun, inclusive, and safe environment. The activities and games that are played with the parachute helps students learn teamwork skills, muscular endurance, and community in the class. One game that we played is called \"popcorn.\" There are balls on the top of the parachute, and the students use their teamwork skills to get the all the balls of the parachute using small or big wave movements with their arms. Students work as a class to complete this challenge in about 1:00. \r\n\r\nThis month, we have been working on a lot of teamwork skills in P.E. class to help us get to know our new classmates, using kind and encouraging language, and having achieving a goal in small groups. The lessons before using the parachute all came together so we can use the parachute with showing all these characteristics we have been learning. \r\n\r\nI am forever grateful for all donors for contributing in any way to give these students this piece of equipment that helps promote inclusive learning to all students. With the new clay tools and materials, every student was able to practice shaping, pinching, adding texture, and decorating their own unique planter. Watching their confidence grow as they transformed a simple piece of clay into something functional and personal was incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nYour support also helped us take our artwork beyond the art room. After creating their planters, students planted marigold seeds and will have the opportunity to care for and watch something grow in a container they made themselves. This project connected art with science, nature, responsibility, and social-emotional learning while encouraging students to practice patience and care. These resources have become some of the most requested tools in our counseling office and have helped create meaningful conversations about feelings in a way that is engaging, safe, and developmentally appropriate for our elementary students.\r\nThe SPOT books introduce important social-emotional skills such as identifying emotions, self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, problem-solving, and healthy coping strategies. Many young children struggle to put their feelings into words. The colorful characters and relatable stories help students recognize emotions in themselves and others, giving them the language they need to express what they are experiencing.\r\nReading in our counseling space is interactive and hands-on. Students often choose a SPOT book that matches how they are feeling, read together with the counselor, and then use the corresponding plush toy to discuss emotions, practice coping skills, and role-play real-life situations. The plush toys provide comfort and help students feel more relaxed while talking about difficult feelings or experiences.\r\nSome of our youngest students have especially benefited from these resources. Children who are typically hesitant to talk about their emotions often open up when holding a SPOT plush and discussing the character's feelings. Students experiencing anxiety, frustration, sadness, or friendship challenges frequently connect with the stories and use the characters as a bridge to share their own experiences. They both serve as tools for encouragement and regulation. The dry erase magnetic paper is used to keep track of our class stars. This is when students work together to clean up and keep their area organized. These stars are reviewed everyday and can easily be changed due to the whiteboard material. They look forward to earning stars and working together towards a common goal. \r\n\r\nThe flexible seating bounce chair is another class favorite. I have seen students who normally struggle to sit still be able to complete their work with this tool. They use it to quietly bounce in their area and slightly roll around. This subtle movement makes all the difference for my students. They are grateful for both tools. When they first saw both tools they were very excited! They understood how these tools would benefit them as individuals but also everyone as a class culture. Moving forward, we will continue to utilize the class reward chart as we are now able to easily change it. As well as encourage more students to try out this chair to see how it helps their learning.
