The Massachusetts Children's Book Award has become a highlight of the year for the 4th - 6th graders in the school library. The books are always high quality and they often introduce the students to a diverse set of characters and settings. The wide variety of selections also encourages students to read outside of their usual comfort area. To participate in the program, the students have to read at least five of the twenty five titles, but many choose to read more than five. For some students, these might be the only chapter books they will choose to read all year. \r\n\r\nIt would be hard to continue to participate in this program without your support. I like to buy multiple copies of the books that the kids seem especially interested in and that's not usually an option for our small school library. Each year we've participated in the program, we've had more kids joining in and it's exciting to reveal the new books each spring. It's very much appreciated. I work in a small rural school, and many of my students rarely or never go a public library. The school library is their only access to books they can read of their own choosing when they are away from school. This vital resource does so much for the students on a small budget. \r\n\r\nI frequently turn to the Donors Choose community because not only is the budget very small (it's not even enough to buy one new book per student each year), but the school district has frozen the budget every year so I can't replace books mid-year if they are lost or damaged and I can't act on student or teacher book requests. Donors Choose is the only way I can consistently meet the needs of the students in my school. Our library budget is never enough to cover all the book requests and the rising costs of books. This year was especially challenging since the school budget was frozen just a few months into the school year. \r\n\r\nThe kids love the axolotl and capybara books. Those are very popular right now. And the longer books have piqued the interest of the older students, which is important. The more choices we have in the library, but better the chance that a student will find just what they are looking for to keep reading. Thank you for supporting my Donors Choose project. With your support, I was able to purchase inflatable wiggle cushions, noise reducing headphones, and Velcro (to stick on chairs as a sensory tool). The more I learn about neurodiversity, the more I come to understand that the school environment can be very overwhelming and that we can make a difference by providing the right kind of supports to the students. When these supports are available to everyone, kids feel empowered to make choices to support their learning. It's really cool to see them take ownership over these tools and their time in the library.\r\n\r\nI want everyone to feel comfortable in the library because I know that when students feel like they belong, they will stay open, curious, and engaged as readers and members of the classroom community. At this point, the students know the routines for how to select, use, and care for these tools. It's pretty smooth and I know it's helping the students who need these supports.
