Our school is situated along a beautiful rural river. Many of our students live along this river. Sadly, there was an industrial accident at a local mill that killed all of the fish downstream on Labor Day, just as our school year began. Our first graders were upset by this accident and wanted to do something about it. Our school has a new service-learning initiative and we decided to empower the students to come up with a solution to this issue. In our service-learning model, we empower the students to work collaboratively to come up with a solution. After learning more about which fish were killed and the fish life cycle, our students decided to work with Trout Unlimited to raise trout eggs in the classroom. We would also like to create necklaces for every student in our school to represent the more than 10,000 fish that were killed. These projects are student driven, timely, and meaningful!
