Because of your donations, students now have access to resources that help make learning more engaging, interactive, and supportive of their individual needs.\r\n\r\nWe have already begun using the new materials during classroom lessons, small group activities, and student-centered projects. One memorable moment was watching students be creative during a collaborative activity where they were able to use the new resources to express their personalities, create, and share their ideas with confidence. Students who are usually hesitant to participate became excited and eager to contribute because they finally had tools that helped them feel successful and included.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate. Many students smiled, asked questions, and could not wait to begin using everything. Several students commented that they felt \"special\" and \"lucky\" to have people who cared about their education. It was a wonderful reminder that your generosity not only provides supplies, but also encourages students to feel valued and motivated.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our lessons and projects, these resources will help students strengthen their creative skills. Our next steps include using the materials for future collaborative projects, hands-on learning experiences, and activities that encourage creativity, communication, and critical thinking. The resources will continue to support students throughout the school year and help create a positive and engaging classroom community.\r\n\r\nThank you again for believing in my students and investing in their success. In addition to future horticulturists we may also be sparking some future engineers as they problem solved how to put those garden beds together. Students are stopping me in the hall to ask, \"when are you going back out to work in the garden?\" Next step? Filling those beds with dirt! \r\nWe have also started some seeds indoors and have already seen plants sprouting. The excitement is in the air for all that we will grow. It's been a temperamental spring so far, but we are hoping the Northeast has seen its last frost so that we can get all the beds planted. \r\nBecause of your support, students are learning about the hard work and joy that comes with growing your own food (we've got some flowers too). The expansion this year will allow us to send produce home with students so whole families will enjoy fresh foods (and the economic relief that comes from not having to purchase it from the grocery store). \r\nThank you so much for your commitment to the students and ensuring they get valuable life experiences as part of their educational journey. They explored the books with curiosity and excitement, many expressing how powerful it felt to see stories and figures that reflect their identities and experiences. These moments have sparked thoughtful conversations, deeper understanding, and a genuine sense of pride.\r\nThe addition of music and hands-on materials has created an entirely new level of engagement. Students aren't just learning about Black history, they are experiencing it. Through rhythm, storytelling, and collaboration, they've been able to express themselves creatively while building confidence and community within the classroom.\r\nOne of the most powerful impacts has been the way these resources have encouraged student voice. Students who are typically quiet have stepped forward to share ideas, participate in discussions, and take pride in their learning. The classroom has become more inclusive, joyful, and connected.\r\nThese materials are not just being used for a single unit or celebration, they will continue to support culturally responsive teaching all year long. I have spent this past year trying to build an independent reading program in my classroom. Many of my 9th graders can't remember the last book they've read, let alone one they chose for themselves. We know the importance of getting kids to read and that reading is a valuable skill that students will need for the rest of their lives. Regular reading for pleasure decreases stress and also increases test scores. Since starting this program, nearly 75% of my students have already met their growth thresholds on our progress monitoring assessments before the end of the year.\r\n\r\nThis year, I've dedicated our shorter Friday class periods just for reading for pleasure! Students complete independent reading journals, but read their own books at their own pace, with check-ins along the way. However, I can't acquire all the books that kids want to read, and even though I've made sure 100% of the 9th grade has a library card, I still want reading to be as accessible as possible for them.\r\n\r\nThese books were all direct requests from my students of what they would like to read. I am so excited for my students to read these books and learn from them. I appreciate your support as I attempt to build a new generation of young people who love to read and in turn, learn. Because of your generosity, my 6th and 7th grade students now have access to tools that help them focus, regulate their energy, and stay engaged in their learning.\r\n\r\nWe began using the materials right away during our reading comprehension and math support blocks. Many of my students have difficulty staying focused for long periods of time, especially when they are working through challenging reading passages or math problems. The chair bands and seat cushions have been incredibly helpful because they allow students to move their feet or shift slightly while still staying seated and engaged in the lesson. I noticed that students were able to concentrate longer and needed fewer breaks during independent work time.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were very excited and curious about how they would work. After explaining that these tools were designed to help them stay focused and comfortable while learning, they were eager to try them. The noise-canceling headphones quickly became a favorite, especially for students who are easily distracted by noise. During reading and independent work time, students who used the headphones were able to block out distractions and concentrate more on their assignments.\r\n\r\nThe reading comprehension cards have also been a great addition to our small group instruction. We are using them to practice important skills such as identifying key details, answering questions about text, and strengthening overall comprehension.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students are to continue building their reading comprehension and math problem-solving skills while also learning strategies that help them manage focus and stay engaged in class. These tools are helping create a more supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable, confident, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThank you again for investing in my students and helping provide the resources they need to succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1768438590505,"projectUrl":"project/supporting-students-with-comforting-too/9759936/","projectTitle":"Supporting Students With Comforting Tools Needed for Success","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Aguilar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10280093"},{"teacherId":7759866,"projectId":9846603,"letterContent":"Thank you for your incredible donation to our classroom.\r\n\r\nMy students enjoy seeing the bulletin board as they walk past our classroom, and are actively working on the reading project in order to see more of their work displayed on the board. Students noticed right away that the room felt more organized and ready to go. No one had to ask for a pencil. Papers had a place. We were able to start class without the usual scrambling. It may sound small, but that shift helped students settle in faster and stay focused longer. I could move straight into instruction instead of pausing to solve basic supply problems.\r\nWe've been using the binders and tables during small group work and writing assignments. Students are keeping track of their work better and finishing more of it. One day during a group activity, a few students who usually struggle to stay engaged stayed with the task the whole period. They had their materials, knew where to sit, and didn't feel lost. That consistency has helped me raise expectations and add more depth to our lessons because the foundation is finally there.\r\nNext, we're building on that momentum. I'm working on more structured projects where students can collaborate, write, and present their work. The goal is to keep pushing the rigor while maintaining the steady environment these materials helped create. We spend less time looking for pencils or organizing loose papers and more time actually getting into the lesson. That alone has made a difference. Students are turning in more complete work, and we've been able to raise the level of what we're asking them to do. I'm able to push them a little more because the basics are finally in place.\r\nOne moment that stuck with me happened during a small group activity. We used the new tables and projector to walk through an assignment together. Usually, that kind of lesson can fall apart quickly. This time, students stayed seated, had their materials, and worked through it step by step. A few who normally check out stayed with it the whole period. It wasn't dramatic. Just steady progress. But that's the kind of shift that matters here.\r\nFor me, the biggest impact has been the ability to focus more on teaching and less on putting out small fires. I'm looking forward to building more structured, rigorous lessons now that the room is organized and predictable. The variety of authors and main characters fits our demographic and they can see themselves in the stories.
