Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez is set in Argentina and focuses on a young girl who aspires to play professional soccer. This book has a focus on feminist ideology in a LatinX setting, while still including high interest topics like romance and sports. This novel will be paired with a larger unit focused on Informational writing and Careers, in which the students will research a career of personal interest and conduct an interview with someone in the field. This novel has the added benefit of being by a LatinX author, my own students are primarily LatinX, and I think it is important to feature an own-voices author for my students. The memoir Shoe Dog follows Phil Knight's experiences founding Nike. This memoir will be paired with a persuasive writing unit focused on marketing and advertising. The major project for this unit will require students to create and market their own product and pitch that product to an audience in a manner similar to the television show "Shark Tank."
