Your contribution has allowed us to add a wide range of picture books featuring artwork from over 25 artists. These books help our Pre-K to 2nd-grade students build vocabulary, practice observation, and explore more complex themes through visuals. They also support all four major learning styles and offer important representation so students can see people who look like them reflected in the stories and artwork we study. \r\n\r\nReading in our classroom interactive and joyful. Students gather on the carpet to hear stories told, and together we look closely at the illustrations, discuss artistic choices, and connect the images to the stories they tell. Many of the books also help us develop skills like creative thinking and careful observation, and we often follow up our reading with drawing or hands-on activities inspired by the artwork. After students are finished with their assignments for the day, they are always welcome to choose a book to read independently. \r\n\r\nSeveral students have already told me how much they enjoy the new books. One of our students, Ernesto, was enchanted by a book with a child that looked almost exactly like him. He was so excited to see this, and called me over to look as soon as he realized. Another student was excited to see a book about an artist who's work she saw in a museum—Alma Thomas. Overall, students are excited to find characters and stories that reflect their own identities and experiences. These items have gone a long way to keep our classroom a healthier and more comfortable space. The cleaning supplies were extremely necessary for keeping our space tidy, and knowing that we have the ability to clean has opened up the door to a lot of fun (and messy) projects. The TPT gift card helped with both visual resources to post around the class, and also for finding substitute plans quickly when I was out with a broken foot. I'm happy to say that students love the new calm corner, and know now that there is a dedicated space that they can go to when they feel overwhelmed. The new art materials helped to supplement what we already had and fill in the gaps of what we were missing. \r\n\r\nNow that we have cleaning supplies, a calm corner, and a resource library to pull from, we've been creating more complex artworks! Students are learning the importance of both expressing themselves and keeping our shared space clean. Students especially loved using printmaking techniques to create their own T shirts.
