Every day in Language Lab, students use AI-powered tools like Speakable and Summit K12 to practice listening and speaking skills that require clarity, focus, and confidence. Before this project, we relied on outdated and damaged headphones that often cut out, let in noise, or made students feel self-conscious about speaking out loud. Now each student has a designated pair of clean, comfortable, noise-reducing headphones, and the difference has been extraordinary. Classes begin smoothly without equipment problems, soft-spoken students no longer need to raise their voices or beg to record outside or alone, and everyone can hear themselves clearly as they practice English.\r\n\r\nWe are also seeing measurable growth in their listening and speaking skills. In Summit K12, 75% of students improved their scores in just the first 3 months of school, with an average gain of nearly half a point on their first benchmark. Several students gained more than a full point, and many who were once nervous to participate now record their responses with confidence. The headphones have removed a major barrier that used to make speaking practice stressful, and students can now focus fully on fluency and accuracy.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most exciting is the pride students take in these new headphones. Having their own assigned pair, something sturdy, clean, and professional, makes them feel trusted and valued. They take care of them far better than the worn-out class sets we used before by cleaning them and putting them away at the end of each period, and even checking if other headphones were put away in the correct numbered pocket. One student who rarely spoke above a whisper told me, \"Teacher, now the computer can hear me,\" and they don't avoid computer practice like they did last school year. These small moments of confidence are exactly what help multilingual learners find their voices. Your donation has given my students the tools they need to grow, and it has truly made a difference in their learning.","fullyFundedDate":1754577110282,"projectUrl":"project/voices-rising-headphones-for-language-l/9531958/","projectTitle":"Voices Rising: Headphones for Language Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lu","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8857781_orig.png?crop=532,532,x0,y40&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754312751827","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8857781"},{"teacherId":3746124,"projectId":8954212,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our wrestling team stepped onto the mat with confidence, both literally and figuratively. The new wrestling shoes made an immediate impact on our student-athletes, many of whom are newcomers to the United States and experienced organized sports for the first time. When we opened the boxes together, students lit up with excitement, disbelief, and pride. Several tried the shoes on right away, walking around the gym grinning and saying, \"I feel like a real wrestler now!\" It was a powerful moment of belonging and dignity for students who often arrived with limited resources and many challenges on their shoulders.\r\n\r\nThe shoes quickly transformed our practices. Students were able to train safely, move confidently, and fully engage in drills and technique without worrying about slipping or wearing shared, worn-out gear. One of our refugee students, who previously struggled with balance and foot support, completed his first full practice smiling from ear to ear. Your gift removed a barrier and opened the door for him and others to experience what it felt like to be strong, capable, and part of a team.\r\n\r\nAs we moved through the competitive season, our next steps included refining technique, building conditioning routines, and preparing students for their first matches, many of which were their first athletic competitions ever. Because of you, they stepped onto the mat equipped, prepared, and proud. We cannot thank you enough for believing in our multilingual, multicultural champions and giving them a chance to shine.","fullyFundedDate":1735685539731,"projectUrl":"project/building-champions-wrestling-shoes-for/8954212/","projectTitle":"\"Building Champions: Wrestling Shoes for Immigrant & Refugee Students\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gilliard-Arthur","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3746124_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1543391578873","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/healthyihslp"},{"teacherId":5079864,"projectId":9545122,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our mini composition notebook Language in their Pocket project! My students were so excited to receive them, and we're already putting them to great use. Each notebook is divided into sections based on vowel sounds, so students collect and organize new academic vocabulary words by their main vowel. They love figuring out where each word belongs — it's like solving a small language puzzle.\r\n\r\nThis project is already making a big impact. My English Learners are becoming more aware of how English sounds and how words are pronounced, which helps them feel more confident using those words in class discussions and writing. We'll continue adding words all year, and by June each student will have a personal collection of academic vocabulary they've built themselves.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping my students find their voices in English.","fullyFundedDate":1755040753005,"projectUrl":"project/language-in-their-pockets/9545122/","projectTitle":"Language in their Pockets!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Amadeo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5079864"},{"teacherId":3746124,"projectId":8890059,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our English Language Learners now have access to restorative yoga mats, bolster pillows, and blankets that have transformed our classroom environment. The first day the materials arrived, my students' faces lit up with excitement and relief, they immediately understood that these resources were meant for them. We began with simple breathing and grounding exercises, and many students shared that it was the calmest they had felt all week. For students navigating stress, immigration challenges, and language barriers, having a safe, peaceful space has been deeply meaningful.\r\n\r\nWe've since integrated restorative yoga into our daily Health, PE, and SEL lessons, pairing movement and breathwork with vocabulary development and social-emotional skills like self-regulation, emotional awareness, and empathy. One powerful moment came when a student said, \"Miss, my mind finally feels quiet.\" Moments like these remind us how essential mindful movement is for our learners' well-being and confidence.\r\n\r\nNext, our students are working on a \"Mindfulness Toolbox\" project where they reflect on strategies that help them regulate emotions during school. They volunteer and distribute the cleaning supplies as a group to wipe down desks at the end of the day.\r\n\r\nThe comfy seating is so popular that I'll have to do more fundraising in the future - kids love the bean bag chair and the yoga balls as other options to standard student desk chairs. \r\n\r\nIt's been a relief to not purchase these items out of pocket, and it makes students feel important that people took the time to donate materials for them to have a more comfortable experience.
