This helped children who are restless or very active get their energy out in a safe way.\r\n\r\nThe fidget helped students stay focused and calm during learning activities. We have special city-wide programs for three, four, and five year olds, most of whom process sensory information differently. They have been coming to the sensory room to get those needs met every day when it is cold and outdoor recess is not available. We are so grateful they have a place to go with materials just for them! Some of the students like relaxing on our new, clean, comfy carpet, and some like to use our new play doh or fidgets. \r\n\r\nStudents of all ages have been using the space with me, the social worker, or other school-based therapists like the occupational therapist. Those students, and many more of all ages, are loving taking breaks in the room to get to use the materials we have because of you! IEP tools also support self-regulation by providing clear routines, calming strategies, and prompts that help students recognize their feelings and choose appropriate responses. One of the projects they particularly liked involved gathering in small groups to delve deeper into the book. Afterward, they presented various ways to practice kindness toward themselves and others. They also had the chance to answer questions to assess their understanding. One group chose to perform skits, challenging their classmates to identify whether they were demonstrating acts of kindness or selfish behavior.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the students were tasked with performing acts of kindness at home for a week. We have volunteers in the building who wash clothes weekly for the students if needed, but when they are sofa surfing, going from house to house, they tend to lose their possessions. \r\n\r\nHaving uniforms available, including fresh socks and underclothes, made the students smile and eager to come to the building and learn.
