There were immediate offers to work with the Legos, and to even merely sort them by color. The seemingly simple activity brought multiple students together from different groups; the kinesthetic aspect and ability to work while chatting contributes to a community-building environment in my classroom in unexpected but delightful ways.\r\n\r\nUpon bringing out the Legos as an early-finisher activity after a district exam one of the students voiced skepticism, as she was suspicious I had a specific task or assignment in mind. She was quite pleased when I assured her that she could build what she wished, creativity in a math classroom is too seldom practiced.\r\n\r\nThe puzzles and activities beyond the Legos also contribute to collaborative and unstructured moments that allow for students to explore multiple possible solutions and configurations with each other. Middle school is an important time to create the possibility for spontaneous collaboration without a focus on social groups; the applied math items in the room provide the context for the groupwork to develop.\r\n\r\nI continue to work to bring creativity and unique projects into the classroom. My next steps are to supplement the curriculum in the next few weeks with hands-on activities, using Legos to help teach ratios, to use paper folding to teach geometric nets, and to use magnetic blocks to teach volume. These activities will incorporate creativity, and kinesthetic learning in mastering specific learning standards. I am looking forward to this next step of increasing the impact of these hands-on activities in my classroom, and beyond.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your support will continue to grow. The labeled analog clock and the large digital clock with the date help students connect different types of time-telling devices as well as enable them to tell time independently, without sneaking a peek at their phones. The flip calendar and the monthly calendar allow the students to keep track of the day, date, and any important events.\r\n\r\nI have seen a huge increase in independence with telling time and keeping track of the days. My students are required to write their own passes for the bathroom and before these tools, they were constantly asking me what time it was and what date it was. Now, they are able to find that information independently. Students have learned to rely on the monthly calendar to keep track of events, holidays, and count downs. Two shy students are in charge of maintaining the daily flip calendar and I see their confidence blossom when given an important job to keep our class running smoothly. A few students have individual goals of telling time on an analog clock. They are able to tell time using the labels and then comparing that to the digital clock to check their answers. \r\n\r\nThe independence that this has afforded my students is immeasurable. They are able to keep track of time and dates and I can see their confidence and maturity grow. No more sneak peeks at their phones for the time, no more claims that they didn't know about an event or deadline. I feel the class is calmer, the students are more invested in their learning, and I am less stressed by constant interruptions.","fullyFundedDate":1757683109989,"projectUrl":"project/what-time-is-it/9544818/","projectTitle":"What Time Is It?","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wilson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10101394_orig.jpg?crop=525,525,x0,y229&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1785661933207","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10101394"},{"teacherId":9972924,"projectId":9393329,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping to fund my Grade-Go-Getter cards and Social Studies Star Prizes! \r\n\r\nI have not sent grade go-getter cards yet this year, but last year my students were ecstatic when they knew they were getting physical mail home for increasing their grade. \r\n\r\nIn addition, my students are eager to pick out of my prize box when they earn it through hard work or spending their PBIS bucks that they earn through exhibiting respect, responsibility, civility, and hope. \r\n\r\nI am excited to see what my students can do this year with the motivation that you al have helped me provide!
