Once outside in our outdoor classroom, students make a group circle under our Boxelder tree and spend about 2-3 minutes quietly observing. We discuss seasonal changes that we notice, and then have students move up in pairs to investigate certain aspects of our Boxelder tree. Students have been documenting what they notice about the tree's leaves, bark, seeds, as well as signs of animals near or on the tree and recording these in their outdoor learning journals. \r\n\r\nThis weekly practice has become a calming part our day and is something that we all look forward to. The cushions have allowed for students to sit comfortably outdoors in any kind of weather, and students have been proud to take ownership in carrying these tools outside for learning. In the upcoming weeks, students will also become responsible for carrying their nature learning bags which contain their journals and writing utensils. The addition of the microscopes, magnifying glasses, tweezers and balance scale have provided my young learners with tools that allow them to investigate and feel like true scientists. Within this space, students have the opportunity to explore and take risks as learners. This past week our science center focused on exploring and investigating pumpkins. Within this space, students had the opportunity to measure pumpkins using the rulers, linking chains, and unified cubes. Students practiced using the balance scale as they placed the pumpkins on the scale and compared the weight of each pumpkin to groups of counting bears and unifix cubes. Students also exploring using the microscope to closer study the outside of each pumpkin, along with pumpkin stems and other parts. These new tools have been a wonderful addition to our learning space.
