Other teachers and staff would often walk into my classroom and immediately notice the calm environment that I was able to create thanks to this ambient lighting project. It´s amazing to think of how such a seemingly benign detail can make such a difference in the classroom!\r\n\r\nStudents from other classes that were dysregulated would sometimes come into my classroom and just calmly take a seat. I noticed that my own students complained less of headaches, and I even found my eyes squinting less. The soft lighting throughout the room just genuinely worked to create a tranquil space, especially for the increasing number of students that identify as neurodivergent.\r\n\r\nI stepped up this move towards a more peaceful classroom by also filling my space with succulent plants. Without the over-stimulating effects of the fluorescent lights, we were able to keep all of the window shades up all day and enjoy the natural light. My very large \r\nwindow space became the perfect setting for propagating new succulents with the leaves that got bumped off, and each of my students went home with their own succulent plant at the end of the year that we had grown together. Ambient lighting and lots of plants makes for such a lovely vibe in the classroom! And it sets me up nicely to tackle my big goal for this year - getting kids to really fall in love with reading good ole paperback books! This is one of the major struggles of our current generation of learners.
