The books have not been with us long, but we have been able to utilize the glossary for various words we have in our curriculum's lessons. There was even a word game we played using words from the glossary specific to what concept we are talking about, and students had to give hints to the person at the front of class to help that student at the front, recall what word they were talking about/written on the board. It was very useful for my ESL students who usually don't have any reference word to have them say anything when we play that game in class.\r\n\r\nComing back from the winter holidays, I will implement the books at the start of our class, doing a couple of review questions at the start of class. I will also give students mini lessons on flex days of questions we have not yet covered in depth yet and that might have been on a previous week's lesson. Being in the middle of the year, this is going to be a consistent way to amp up the review from items we have learned way at the start of the school year, but that students will be expected to provide answers for in the spring on state testing. Additionally, this will make excellent homework on those weeks closer to testing, when there is MUCH to cover in our district's curriculum during the school day. I cannot wait to see the major affects of this project coming to fruition on their testing, and we would not have this without your generosity. The magazines of this project are such a hit, I have had students ask to bring them home! With three classes of students, it is not possible to give them all one to bring home. But this is where the online access is such a valuable component. Not only do the children get to read the articles online, but they play games and watch videos specific to the article's content. WITHOUT ADS. WITHOUT WORRY OF SOMETHING INAPPROPRIATE POPPING UP. \r\n Scholastic has always been a trusted source, but I believe having these magazines have also given insight to things my students otherwise would never know about. The content is unmatched, students show their friends and children are completing assignments to be able to have time to look at what their friends saw. What happened was SO. MUCH. MORE. We began using them on our science \"Flex days,\" and the students really enjoyed the dancing scientist, playing Kahoot to test what they have learned, and make connections in vocabulary that is frequently used in our Great Minds curriculum. They have really looked forward to watching them for indoor recess, instead of playing board games, doing a Go Noodle Indoor Recess video, or even using the Chromebooks to go onto teacher approved websites! Mostly, I have had them look at the different experiments from the videos, and decide if there is one they would like to do on flex days. I have not had the opportunity to do one in class yet, but have printed two for students to do at home, and I had a couple of students come back with some information to share during lessons when having whole class discussions.\r\n My favorite part of it all is something unexpected. My students struggle with application of concepts learned. Previous learning made it easy for students to do well in science by being good readers, or having good inferencing skills. The new standards and curriculum we use are now very hands on. This means the students need to apply in \"real-world scenarios what we learned. The \"Real-World-Science\" portions of the Generation Genius videos make their eyes light up, when they see that what we are learning is literally happening all around them! It has given a new lens for them to look out of, and give deeper understanding to the concepts taught. This, is the difference in a basic and a mastery on end of year state testing, and I love that we can take the standards further in a fun and engaging way! Thank you for giving this gem to my students. Knowing that the girls would want to read the Junie B Jones and Brambly series the most, they received the first pick of book to bring outside, and that WAS the first set of books be selected. They also could not believe that even at the end of the school year, people were still out there thinking to give to them, and that made me happy to hear them consider this even as 7 and 8 year old's. At the start of them getting used to hearing the term Negro Leagues, there were some eyes looking and grins forming. But after things like a Hispanic student explaining the word negro in Spanish means black, and them listening to \"the first inning\" of the book from the project, \" We are the Ship,\" they genuinely understood the seriousness of what we were learning.\r\nWhen they first opened up the materials, I do believe they were first stunned that someone who did not know them, would give them materials they love to use. But then after looking at the amount of crayons and markers, and realizing the correlation to what we were reading about and talking about with respects to Mr. Lilly, they treasured what we had. Students have always had an issue with capping markers through the years, but it seemed they took a bit more pride in these materials, and it made me happy to hear them ALL speaking of how they, \" Have a color like me.\" Although baseball cards were what we were after, our practicing with tracing fell short on time, preparing for what is now considered state testing for second graders (DIBELS). Our time was used to create valuable images of various players from the Negro League like Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Oscar Charleston. I do believe the students of all colors in my class enjoyed every moment of learning, and none of it would have been as valued if you had not given to this project.
