Students used the filament to design and print prototypes, engineering models, problem-solving challenges, and custom creations connected to classroom lessons. Instead of only learning about the engineering design process through discussion, students were able to actively plan, test, redesign, and improve their projects through hands-on experiences. This made learning more meaningful and increased student engagement, creativity, and critical thinking skills. 🖨️✨\r\n\r\nThe filament also gave students opportunities to explore real-world STEM applications while building confidence in technology and design. Students learned how to use 3D modeling software, troubleshoot printing issues, measure accurately, and collaborate with peers to improve their designs. Many students who normally struggle in traditional classroom settings became highly engaged and excited when they saw their ideas come to life through 3D printing. Throughout the investigation, students used a variety of magnets to test attraction, repulsion, distance, motion, and the effects of magnetic force on different materials. Students manipulated bar magnets, ring magnets, magnetic wands, compasses, and electromagnets to observe how magnetic fields can create motion without direct contact. They designed and tested systems where magnets pushed and pulled objects, moved items across surfaces, and transferred energy through magnetic interactions. Students also explored how the strength of magnetic force changes depending on distance, magnet orientation, and material type. By physically feeling the force of magnets pulling together or pushing apart, students were able to better understand abstract science concepts that are often difficult to visualize through worksheets or textbook instruction alone.\r\n\r\nDuring the project, students worked collaboratively to conduct investigations, collect data, and explain patterns they observed through scientific discussions and written CER responses. Many students experimented with magnetic levitation systems, magnetic racing activities, and obstacle-style challenges where magnets were used to move objects without touching them directly. Students tested which materials were magnetic, compared magnetic strength between different magnets, and investigated how magnetic force could create changes in motion and speed. Through trial and error, students refined their designs and developed problem-solving skills while applying scientific practices such as planning investigations, analyzing data, and constructing evidence-based explanations. The hands-on nature of the project increased student engagement and participation, especially for students who benefit from tactile and visual learning experiences. Students were excited to explore how magnets are used in real-world applications such as transportation systems, engineering, generators, motors, medical equipment, and technology devices they use every day.\r\n\r\nThe project also strengthened students' understanding of Louisiana 6th grade science standards related to forces, motion, energy transfer, and interactions at a distance. Rather than simply memorizing vocabulary, students experienced science concepts firsthand by actively manipulating materials and observing cause-and-effect relationships in real time. Students learned that magnetic forces can act on objects even when they are not touching, helping them build a deeper understanding of invisible energy systems and interactions. Many students demonstrated increased confidence in scientific thinking by making predictions, testing ideas, revising explanations, and defending conclusions with evidence from their investigations. Classroom discussions became more meaningful as students used academic vocabulary naturally while explaining why magnets behaved in certain ways under different conditions.\r\n\r\nOverall, the \"Feel the Magnetic Force\" project transformed science learning into an active, inquiry-based experience that encouraged curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Students were highly engaged throughout the activities and frequently asked to continue experimenting beyond the required investigations. The project created a memorable learning experience that connected classroom science to real-world engineering and technology applications while helping students develop essential STEM skills. By providing opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and discovery, the project helped students see science as something they can actively investigate and understand rather than simply read about in a textbook.","fullyFundedDate":1739590155799,"projectUrl":"project/feel-the-magnetic-force/9102332/","projectTitle":"Feel the Magnetic Force!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jones","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9895303_orig.jpg?crop=1845,1845,x0,y233&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755876706030","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9895303"},{"teacherId":9895303,"projectId":9283547,"letterContent":"The donated headphones have become an essential part of our daily classroom learning experience. Having reliable headphones allows students to fully engage with technology-based learning without distractions from the busy classroom environment. Students are able to clearly hear directions, instructions, and feedback while working independently or collaboratively on projects. This has greatly improved focus, participation, and overall engagement during lessons.\r\n\r\nThe headphones have also helped create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. Many of our activities involve multimedia resources, engineering design challenges, and problem-solving tasks that require students to carefully listen, analyze information, and apply what they learn. Students have used the headphones while designing projects, exploring science concepts through simulations, and completing hands-on STEM activities connected to real-world learning. The ability to work at their own pace with clear audio support has increased student confidence and independence in the classroom.\r\n\r\nBecause of this generous donation, students now have greater access to meaningful, technology-rich learning experiences that encourage creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They kept saying, \"Look, we have new whiteboards!\" While we haven't had the opportunity to use the classroom buzzers yet, we will as testing season approaches. I like to group the students in teams and play math games for mastery. \r\n\r\nI absolutely love the mobile whiteboard. I am able to roll it from my classroom, to my inclusion classroom with ease. I use it in my inclusion classroom to reteach lessons or parts of a lesson that students are struggling on. I conveniently group six or seven students in the rear of the classroom to re-teach the lesson during independent work time. If a student grasps the concept in the small group setting I allow the student to return to their original desk and allow another student who needs enrichment to take the open desk. I also found the mobile whiteboard allows me to go from group to group to reinforce the lesson, when students fall behind or don't understand. It allows my co-teacher and I to simultaneously teach students of various levels successfully. In my own classroom, I use the mobile whiteboard for small group teaching (8-10 kids). I do not have a whiteboard in my room so this helps tremendously. When I roll the whiteboard down the hall, teachers always stop me and say that my board is something they could use because of its convenience. \r\n\r\nAs we enter into Christmas Break, we will not be starting any new lessons until January 2026.
