There was no assignment attached to the book, I simply wanted my students to have a book of their own. I believe that the more books students have around them, the more likely they are to pick one up, become curious, and discover the power of reading. I also love knowing that these books may travel beyond my classroom and into students' homes, where a sibling, parent, or other family member might pick it up and read it, too.\r\n\r\nWhat has meant the most to me is hearing from students after returning from summer break. Several students came back and specifically thanked me for giving them the book. That simple gesture reminded me that access to books matters. For some students, having a book that belongs to them can be the beginning of a relationship with reading that extends beyond a classroom assignment. 1984 also gives students an opportunity to encounter challenging ideas about freedom, government, individuality, and the power of information—but more importantly, it gives them a book they can keep, revisit, share, and hopefully continue reading.
