The students were soooo excited at the arrival of so many of their favorite books! The books came at the perfect time for us as we were learning how to become rock star readers. The book nook had been wrapped in caution tape until the time they learned how to choose best fit books. They were more excited than ever because along with being able to tear that caution tape off and finally get their hands on books, they had many boxes of books waiting for them to open and see what had arrived. As I drew names of students to reveal books to the class, they cheered excitedly about their favorite titles. The students continually check out books and have been so engaged in reading. They also ask to check them out to take them home to read. These resources have quickly become tools that we use regularly in our first-grade classroom. The EyeWords have been especially helpful as students learn high-frequency words that can be tricky to read and spell. The pictures and visual cues give students another way to remember these words, and I love seeing them begin to recognize words that were difficult for them before.\r\n\r\nOur desktop dictionaries have also been a wonderful addition to our writing time. First graders have so many great ideas to share, but spelling can sometimes get in the way of getting those ideas onto paper. The dictionaries give students a resource they can use independently when they are unsure how to spell a word. Instead of immediately asking a teacher for help, they are learning to use the tools available to them and take more ownership of their writing.\r\n\r\nAs the year continues, we will keep building our reading and writing skills and encouraging students to become increasingly independent. We will continue adding new high-frequency words to our reading and spelling practice and using our dictionaries as our writing becomes longer and more detailed. It is a favorite place to be. I placed the literacy corner in a corner with big windows to make it even more cozy with natural light. We have been using the literacy games at our small group centers and have been hard at work learning our letters, looking at the books and doing the letter puzzles. The carpet has been used for playtime, reading, partner work and even a place to calm. The bean bags have been a wonderful addition to having more flexible seating options to learn from while doing small group center time or cozying up with a book. We are able to meet at the beginning of the day, learn, play, sing, dance and close are day here. Every child has their own space is able to have a spot to belong in the classroom. It truly brings our classroom together and is the centerpiece of the room. The students immediately were drawn to it and couldn't wait to find a spot on the carpet. As we settle into routines in our classroom they are not only using it for learning but also on our first rainy day our indoor recess time this spot came right into play with them being able to space out and play on the carpet.
