It has given my students a shared reading experience where everyone can participate fully, keep up with the pace of the class, and feel like they belong in the conversation. Having a class set means we are not taking turns with copies or trying to piece things together. Every student has the same text in front of them, and that changes everything.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest skills this novel helps us build is close reading. My 7th graders are learning how to slow down, notice details, and use the author's words as evidence for their thinking. We practice identifying themes, tracking how characters change, and analyzing how the setting and historical context shape the story. We also work on vocabulary in context, making inferences, and discussing the difference between what a text says directly and what it implies. This book naturally leads to deeper lessons about courage, compassion, and doing what is right even when it is hard, and my students have handled those conversations with so much maturity.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active. Students read independently and with partners, and we also do class read-a-louds so we can pause and talk through important moments together. You would see students annotating, highlighting, jotting questions in the margins, and turning to a page to prove a point during discussion. We use small-group conversations, quick written responses, and text evidence activities to help students organize their thoughts and build confidence in what they have to say.\r\n\r\nThere are absolutely students who are especially enjoying this book. Some of my quieter students have surprised me by speaking up during discussions because they feel connected to the characters and the choices they face. A few students who usually struggle to stay engaged have been more focused because the suspense and emotional weight of the story pulls them in. I have also seen students who love reading light up because they finally get to experience a whole-class novel where everyone is on the same page, literally and figuratively. Watching them recommend chapters to each other, debate character choices, and react to key scenes has been one of the best parts.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. This project has strengthened our reading community, improved student participation, and helped my 7th graders grow as readers and as people.","fullyFundedDate":1757010855348,"projectUrl":"project/whole-class-reading-whole-heart-learnin/9441194/","projectTitle":"Whole-Class Reading, Whole-Heart Learning: Number the Stars","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Buckman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9035796_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751336903296","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sarahbuckmanjmms"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_58168","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":468,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":91,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":79,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":0.0,"schoolId":58168,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about James Madison Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"James Madison Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kentucky/hopkins-county-school-district/james-madison-middle-school/58168"}
