We had a long period of time when temperatures were well below freezing. Due to earlier events when SNAP formerly known as food stamps were stopped for a number of weeks last fall the families at the preschool are struggling financially. Families are struggling with paying rent, utilities, food, gas prices, and getting clothing for their children. \r\n\r\nI am a social worker at the preschool and I like to have extra coats to give to our students if their families are unable to obtain warm coats for their children because of unemployment, or high expenses. I was able to obtain coats of different sizes to have a coat closet so if I am aware of a family that is struggling I can give that child a coat. I find out about the students that need a coat either from staff at the school, or the family themselves. \r\n\r\nI know our families have been appreciative of the coats that have kept their child warm and they have been able to keep a roof over their children's head or pay for utilities that will keep the heat and electricity are on. The hands-on experience helped them stay engaged and focused in a way that traditional activities sometimes cannot.\r\nWe are also using the sensory materials to support speech and language development. During activities, I hide small objects in the sensory bins and encourage students to find and label what they discover.
