They could not wait to touch, explore, build, pour, measure, and discover how everything worked. One of my favorite moments was watching the children work together during water play, filling and emptying containers and comparing which ones held more or less water. What may look like simple play is actually helping them develop early math, science, problem-solving, communication, and social skills.\r\n\r\nWe are using these new resources to make STEM learning hands-on and meaningful for our young learners. The students are learning through exploration by making predictions, asking questions, testing their ideas, building structures, and discovering cause and effect. These materials have also encouraged teamwork as students share resources, take turns, communicate their ideas, and solve problems together. I love hearing their conversations and watching their excitement when they discover something new!\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue incorporating the materials into our classroom centers and weekly lessons. Students will explore concepts such as sinking and floating, measuring and comparing, counting, building, and experimenting with different materials. As the school year continues, we will encourage them to make predictions before exploring and then talk about what they discovered afterward. The Reading Corner is bright and cozy, at the same time. It is a space with open areas to read or listen to books in a relaxing environment, within the classroom. They are not limited to sitting at a table or desk to read. It is an area with readily available posters with reading tips and motivational quotes to encourage them. It is also a space where they can sit and talk about the books they're reading.\r\n Now, we have reliable headphones for them to listen to digital books and literacy activities on their iPads that they couldn't previously. That means that I can differentiate reading and listening of books at each student's level or interest. I can tailor activities to skills that they need to work on specifically. The pouches that were purchased contain activities that the students can use in the space, as well. \r\n Some of my 3rd graders are listening to The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate. Along with the novel, they are researching gorillas. It also focuses on students being fundamentally provided only with texts that include those phonics skills that have been taught. That leaves a gap in books that struggling readers have access to. For example, until a few years ago, if a student was struggling with short vowels, there were a limited number of books published that only had those skills in them. \r\n Now, thanks to your donation, our students have a plethora of books to choose from where they can get all the practice that they need in the specific skills that they're working on. Research says that it takes a struggling reader more than 100 repetitions to learn something. That means that continued and consistent practice is crucial for them to get that one skill! \r\n Children can go to the basket that targets the skill they are learning or need reinforcement with, and choose books that they want to read and interests them. They know that they are going to be successful in decoding the words in that book, because they have had plenty of practice in reading similar words!\r\n The children and I are overwhelmed by your intentional generosity in choosing our project to fund.
