The math clocks are displayed throughout our classroom and in the hallways, serving as constant visual reminders of mathematical thinking. Students regularly refer to them during lessons to make connections between numbers, patterns, and relationships, reinforcing concepts in an authentic and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nWhen the clocks were first installed, students were excited and proud to see their learning represented beyond the classroom. Many stopped to examine the clocks, pointing out equations they recognized or solving them mentally as they passed by. It quickly became a fun challenge for students to check the time by solving the equation on the clock, which sparked curiosity and ongoing conversations about math throughout the day.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our work with rational numbers and equations, students will use the clocks as a reference tool to practice mental math, justify their reasoning, and build confidence in problem-solving. These clocks have turned everyday spaces into learning environments and created a school-wide culture that celebrates math. They were immediately drawn to the idea of standing up, grabbing markers, and working together to solve problems. The excitement in the room was contagious. It was amazing to see their confidence grow as they realized how much they could learn from their peers.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the whiteboard and organized baskets daily as part of our Building Thinking Classrooms model. Each group has their own space to collaborate, show their thinking, and communicate their reasoning. The vertical working spaces have completely changed our classroom dynamic, students are more engaged, conversations are richer, and even those who were hesitant to share before are now excited to contribute ideas.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue applying this collaborative approach to more complex problem-solving tasks. I'm already seeing students take ownership of their learning, using mathematical vocabulary naturally and helping each other persevere through challenges.
