Your decision to fund an incubator was the first step in creating an incredibly transformative learning experience for my third-grade students. Teaching in a mid-sized urban area means that many of the students I teach would otherwise not have had the opportunity to be this present for a chicken's life cycle. I began having conversations with my class in January to prepare them for what this project would look like and how it would impact our daily routine. The incubator's appearance in our classroom is when it truly became real. From the first use of the incubator's candler to peak inside an egg until the seventh and final chick hatched, my students were hooked. Many took on the role of fierce protectors. Others were overcome with questions and their innate sense of curiosity. Spanning three weeks in total, it was rewarding to watch my 26 third graders mature into rising fourth graders as this project took us almost right to the end of the school year. \r\n\r\nAs a first year teacher last year, I wanted to deliver as many unique learning experiences to my students as I possibly could. This project played an important role in that goal, but also connected me to the greater school community. The chicks drew so many excited visitors to my room and it cemented the feeling that my class and I were doing something special. I am now teaching 4th grade this year, and cannot wait for my new class of students to engage so passionately with science. The incubator is a wonderful resource to have available to students in my building and I hope it continues to thrill students for years to come.
