Integrating these magazines into our classroom has completely transformed the way my students engage with non-fiction reading and current events.\r\n\r\nWe are reading in many different ways all day long in our classroom. We begin with phonics- Heggerty and UFLI. Then we transition to Fluency- both choral and echo reading short passages. Then we transition to Morphology, leading into our Wonders curriculum. Wonders has both fiction and non-fiction stories, but we have only begun reading fiction. \r\n\r\nBefore we started using Scholastic News, getting students excited about informational texts was sometimes a challenge. Now, the moment I pass out the bright, colorful issues, the room buzzes with curiosity. The articles are written perfectly for their reading level, taking complex, real-world topics and making them accessible, engaging, and highly relevant to their lives. \r\n\r\nAll of my students get excited when it is Scholastic News time! It is a great resource not only for teaching vocabulary and text features such as photographs, captions, graphs, bold print, sidebars, and close-ups, to name a few, but also for comprehension of various topics. It is also great for current events.\r\n\r\nI have seen a noticeable improvement in my students' reading comprehension and vocabulary. The interactive digital features and bold text help my struggling readers feel supported, while the thought-provoking debate topics challenge my advanced readers to think critically and back up their opinions with evidence.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your support in helping me to provide Scholastic News to my students.
