While most just ranked them in order, others customize their ballot with phrases like, \"they all look so good I can't choose,\" or, \"can I read two?\" Students were able to choose a book that they wanted to read and when in book clubs they had structured analytical discussions and also creative assignments. \r\nThanks to you we have a variety of texts and all students are able to access ideas and topics and share the same stories in different structures and forms. Many of our students struggle to have productive small group discussions and create open ended thought provoking questions and these book clubs have supported these important skills. The experience of having unanswered questions and open ended questions is so important. We also have jigsaw conversations where students reading different books meet to discuss the common themes that we see across all of these novels. \r\n\r\nThese books are entry points for a variety of activities: researching and checking on the validity of historical fiction, designing and writing historical fiction, and debating real world humanitarian crisis to decide if these events are genocide or war. I often tell my students that we are reading as readers or writers and these books have us using both lenses. While learning about history and people they are also studying the craft and becoming researchers and writers of historical fiction. In fact, many of them are now writing World War Two and survival stories.","fullyFundedDate":1770999959479,"projectUrl":"project/silent-no-more/10079699/","projectTitle":"Silent No More","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Randhava","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3112563_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1449262169515","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/randhava"},{"teacherId":7849033,"projectId":9202916,"letterContent":"I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your generous support of my DonorsChoose project.
