Because of you, our ballet folklórico dancers now have practice skirts with real length and fullness, plus the tools to make every class count. When I opened the boxes in front of my students, for many of them, it was the first time they had held a skirt made for the dances of their own families.\r\n\r\nThe skirts are in our hands every class. We're working on faldeo, the sweeping skirt work at the heart of folklórico, and for the first time my dancers can practice it the way it's meant to be danced. The hand drums let students take turns keeping the beat for each other's zapateado, the water station keeps everyone going through our hardest rehearsals, and the rolling cart and hooks mean students care for the skirts themselves at the end of each class. \r\n\r\nNext, our after-school group, Ballet Folklórico Los Pumas, is preparing for our performance at the El Mercadito holiday event at Soto High School on December 9, with live music from our school's mariachi. My dancers will step on stage in skirts you helped provide, performing the traditions of their families with pride. Before these books arrived, most of my students knew folklórico as something they'd seen at a party or a parade. Now they know the story behind it: a young woman in Mexico City who traveled across the country studying regional dances and built Ballet Folklórico de México from them. Reading her story, my students learn that every step, skirt movement, and zapateado pattern comes from a real place and a real community. That's the heart of our unit. We read, we talk about where a dance comes from, and then we dance it.\r\n\r\nReading in a dance class looks a little different. We gather on the floor in a circle, often on our new yoga mats, and read a section together. Then we pause to look at the photos of costumes and regions, and students point out what they recognize from their own families. \r\n\r\nOlder students compare regions and the stories each dance tells. Younger students listen and then turn what they heard into movement. Each student has their own copy, so they can go back to the pictures, read ahead, and take ownership of what they're learning. \r\n\r\nMoments like this are why this project matters. My students aren't only learning to dance. They're learning that their culture has a history worth reading about, and that they're part of it. Before your gift, my middle school dancers practiced in skirts that were too short and too narrow for faldeo, the skirt work at the heart of folklórico. Now they have skirts with the length and fullness the technique needs. They're learning to hold, lift and sweep their skirts the way dancers in Jalisco do. We use them every week in our regional unit, and students take turns so every dancer gets to practice faldeo with a real skirt.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students it was the first time they had worn anything that felt like a real folklórico skirt. You could see them stand taller and dance bigger. Students who had been shy about dancing started asking to go first.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will put their faldeo into full combinations and choreography. They're working toward a performance with our school's mariachi program, so they can dance to live music in front of their families. Our program is in its first year with me and I', building it from the ground up. Your donation has helped us provide students with resources that are already being put to use throughout our program. The new strings have allowed us to keep our classroom guitarrones, guitars, and vihuelas properly equipped with quality strings so that students can spend more time learning, practicing, and making music together. Having these materials readily available makes a tremendous difference in keeping our instruments playable and our students actively engaged.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting additions has been our classroom headphones, which have helped me develop a listening station for students. At the station, students can travel back in time and experience music through CDs and cassette tapes. In a world where music is often streamed instantly or heard in short clips, this allows students to slow down, be present, and intentionally listen to an entire song or recording. They have been excited to explore the different formats and discover music in a way that many of them have never experienced before. The binders are also helping students keep their sheet music and classroom materials organized as we build our repertoire throughout the school year.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the year, students will use these resources to strengthen their musicianship, listening skills, organization, and music appreciation. Our instrumental students will continue developing their technique and preparing new repertoire, while the listening station will give students across grade levels another way to explore music, artists, instruments, and musical traditions.
