My students are Chicago's future artists, thinkers, and leaders. I teach dance to about 500 K-8 students at Acero – Jovita Idar Elementary School in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, where roughly 80% are of Latin heritage. Many come from families with deep ties to Mexican culture, yet few have had the chance to formally learn the folklórico dances that are part of their own heritage. In my classroom, they discover pride in their roots through movement, some dancing the dances of their grandparents for the very first time. They are curious, resilient, and full of energy, showing up ready to learn even when resources are limited. My students deserve every opportunity to explore their culture, build confidence, and express themselves through dance, music, and performance.
