My students got cards describing a family that they would embody for the lesson. They are learning how to write and solve algebraic equations. They used the information given on their family card to write an equation showing how many hours they would need to work in order to afford the apartments they wanted for their family. I adapted activities to include housing prices in our neighborhood and got to have some rich discussions where students connected the situations they read to their lived experience.\r\n\r\nDuring this lesson, I saw my students get so much more comfortable with algebra than they ever had been before this year. They loved talking to their classmates and comparing experiences. After that lesson, I saw them making connections in word problems that we STRUGGLED with before trying this out.\r\n\r\nI appreciate the way you all have supported me in expanding my practice and building up my students' agency and skills!","fullyFundedDate":1727743014120,"projectUrl":"project/project-based-learning-curricular-reso/8821679/","projectTitle":"Project Based Learning - Curricular Resources","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. K","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9778499_orig.jpg?crop=2842,2842,x0,y75&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727278799625","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9778499"},{"teacherId":5830182,"projectId":8359037,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our new speaker system has brought joy, energy, and connection to our school community in ways we never imagined. From the moment it was installed, it became a powerful tool for fostering a positive and welcoming environment, and its impact on my students has been nothing short of transformative.\r\n\r\nA Welcoming Start and End to the Day\r\nOne of the first things we implemented with the new speaker system was playing music as students entered and exited the building. This simple addition has had profound effects. Walking into school to the sound of upbeat, inspiring tunes sets the tone for the day, helping students feel energized and ready to learn. As the day ends, hearing cheerful music as they leave creates a sense of closure and optimism. Many students have shared that this ritual brightens their mornings and helps them leave school in a good mood, regardless of how challenging their day might have been.\r\n\r\nParents and staff have also noticed a shift. Several parents have mentioned how their children come home talking about the music and how it makes them excited to go to school. The staff has shared that even their mood improves as they hear the tunes echoing through the halls. It's a ripple effect of positivity that starts with the students and extends to everyone in our community.\r\nThe speaker has also become a tool for enhancing classroom learning and promoting social-emotional growth. During class, we've started incorporating music to set the atmosphere for various activities. For example, calming instrumental music helps create a focused environment during independent work, while energetic songs are perfect for brain breaks or transitions. Music has even become a part of our math lessons, with rhythm and beats used to help students understand patterns and sequences.\r\n\r\nFor some students, particularly those who struggle with anxiety or focus, the music has been transformative. One student, who often has difficulty transitioning between activities, has found comfort in predictable musical cues. Knowing that a certain song signals it's time to clean up or transition to the next task has made a significant difference in their ability to stay calm and engaged.\r\nWhat excites students the most is their involvement in choosing the music. They love suggesting songs that reflect their interests and cultures, and this has created a deeper sense of connection within our diverse school community. Celebrating cultural heritage through music has sparked conversations about traditions, language, and the meaning behind lyrics, turning music into an educational tool for cultural appreciation.\r\n\r\nOne student, in particular, has taken a leadership role by helping curate playlists that represent different cultures and genres. This opportunity has boosted their confidence and allowed them to share something personal with their peers.\r\nThis speaker has done more than play music—it has helped shape a school environment where students feel valued, connected, and motivated. Thank you for providing us with the means to create a soundtrack for our school days, making learning and growing together an even more enriching experience. Your contribution has truly made a lasting impact.","fullyFundedDate":1724083773194,"projectUrl":"project/spark-joy-elevating-student-mornings-/8359037/","projectTitle":"\"Spark Joy: Elevating Student Mornings & Farewells with Vibrant Sound!\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gill","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5830182_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1682020795828","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/missgillteaches"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5459","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":367,"numTeachers":31,"percentFrplEligible":86,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":75,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.5,"schoolId":5459,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Albert Sabin Magnet School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Albert Sabin Magnet School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/chicago-public-school-district-299/sabin-magnet-school/5459"}
