It's funny how much snacks can matter... there is something about coming together after school and gathering around some much needed snacks that just makes you feel cared for. So thank you so much for making my students feel cared for. We took a trip to a queer bookstore after school just a few weeks ago, and it was awesome to get to tell them that we have a small queer library ourselves now! We read Tango Makes Three and the book about Marsha and Sylvia together, and it brought some great discussion and piqued curiosity about LGBTQ history. A few students have the Heartstopper books and the history book at home to read and we will get to switch books as they finish reading them. It's also been great to have pins for kids - we are making t-shirts, but some student don't want anything pride-themed on them because some are not ready to be out at home yet. So the pins are great because for students who are out at school but not at home, they can wear their pin at school and just leave it here. Just yesterday Trump signed an executive order removing protections for queer and trans youth and adults. When trans kids especially can feel so alienated in today's climate, this space is so important, and it means a lot that people I haven't even met are on our side.
