Our students are kids from many cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. They are enthusiastic, talented, and capable learners. We have been working on a West African drumming unit, and their incredible excitement has been matched only by their incredibly respectful treatment of one another and of the instruments they are working with. These kids are also incredibly creative. They love to make their own music by improvising with instruments and voices. Mostly, though, they are regular, wonderful, special kids. Most of them walk to school from their homes. They each have challenges and obstacles, but they are resilient and resourceful. I am honored and inspired by my journey to help them learn and grow each day.
