Because of your donations, students were able to have a dynamic and interactive day engaging with culturally rooted activities celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. \r\n\r\nThroughout the day, students cycled through several stations and engaged in crafts, art, dancing, singing, and more. We were able to create a lively environment with colorful and culturally relevant decorations purchased through donations. In addition, students created piñatas by hand with the tissue paper, flour, candy, and paper strips which we were able to purchase thanks to donors. Finally, students created papel picados and ojos de dios using the yarn, popsicle sticks, tissue paper, and twine supported by donor funding. \r\n\r\nIn summary, this event would not have happened without your donations! The impact it has had on our world studies class has been immediate and incredibly positive. We've already put it to great use as the central station for our model-building project. The students have been working diligently on several historical aircraft, including a B-17 and a V-1 rocket that are now hanging from the ceiling. They are currently in the process of building a B-29 and a Me. 104, and the workbench has become the hub of all this creative energy. What makes your gift so perfect for our space is its versatility. The wheels allow us to move it wherever we need it, and the built-in outlet is invaluable for charging our drill batteries or glue guns, so we can always keep working. The students love having a dedicated space for this hands-on work. It's truly a special part of our learning environment that brings the history we study to life in a tangible way. They have encouraged more students who want to play. I have been approved funding to get piano benches for the keyboards and music books so that the students can also learn how to read music in addition to playing by ear or by YouTube.\r\n\r\nOur music students are turning their wanting to learn how to play the keyboard into a music program for the school. Throughout this unit, my students have been practicing the key skill of identifying and analyzing the development of themes in a text. Because of the rich, relatable, and engaging content of I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, my students have been able to explore many culturally relevant and timely themes while reading this book. Some of these themes include the challenges of immigration, family and generational trauma, mental health, and classism. Students have explored these complex themes through the engaging story of the novel and have had a chance to reflect on their own personal experiences with these themes. The novel has also lent itself to discussions around how these themes play into the real world. \r\n\r\nMy students have enjoyed Julia's flavorful and cutthroat narration, as well as her honesty and refusal to hold back. Many students have been able to connect to this character on a deep emotional level, whether through the difficulty of living up to family's expectations, the pressures from society on young women, or just the journey of self discovery through adolescense. My young girls, and especially my young Mexican girls have really connected with the story and found parts of themselves in the text. In contrast, Julia's difficulties have opened some of my young men's eyes to the additional challenges faced by their female peers, and helped my students that do not have immigrant family members understand the strength and endurance of immigrants to the United States. \r\n\r\nOverall, this book has provided an enriching and engaging reading experience for all of my students, and has helped me learn more about them as young people.
