The magazines are used in a variety of ways to meet the Common Core State Standards for Literacy. First, students read Jr. Scholastic to identify the main idea and details in current-events articles. They are thought-provoking and help our 8th graders not only reach their English Language Arts goals but also their Civics goals by learning about powerful civic actors like Amara Nwuneli of Lagos, Nigeria, now at The University of Chicago, who has built a playground in her community, which provides open space. \r\n\r\nSecondly, our students used the November 2025 issue, \"World and United States Atlas,\" as we read \"The Diary of Anne Frank\" and \"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,\" to familiarize themselves with Europe and the two theaters of war. Having the atlas to map out the sites and locations we were learning about helped students, many of whom have never left Chicago, visualize what was occurring across Europe and elsewhere during World War II. \r\n\r\nLastly, Scholastic News provided our sixth-grade readers with an opportunity to analyze various arguments while learning to read using text features such as pictures, maps, and graphs.","fullyFundedDate":1756391205824,"projectUrl":"project/extra-extra-read-all-about-it/9604252/","projectTitle":"Extra!
