It fits perfectly in our curriculum. We're exploring and analyzing what it means to be on a path of self-identity. The path of Esperanza, the protagonist in The House on Mango Street, is illustrated through the short, powerful chapters of the book. Before The House on Mango Street, we read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, another book that followed a teenager's search for who he is. The two books together have allowed an opportunity for students to compare and contrast the paths of the protagonists. We've also spent a lot of time discussing the intent of the authors and the literary tools they use to portray themes.\r\n\r\nThe House on Mango Street has been well received by all my students, but especially my Latina students. Actually, one girl already had her own copy that she had annotated and marked. She lent the book to another girl who has also already devoured it. Even though they've already read the book, they're so excited to read it again in class. This gives me so much joy because I included The House on Mango Street to hopefully allow students to be seen in the novel, in the struggles and observations of the protagonist. So, the book has definitely been a success! Thank you so much for making this part of my class possible!","fullyFundedDate":1782875050835,"projectUrl":"project/great-literature-in-ms-wights-10th-gra/10359528/","projectTitle":"Great Literature in Ms. Wight's 10th Grade Honors English Class","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wight","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7066591"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_52695","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":437,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":71,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":40,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":55,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":59.1,"schoolId":52695,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about American Falls High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"American Falls High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/idaho/american-falls-school-district-381/american-falls-high-school/52695"}
