Market Day also gave the students the opportunity to practice basic math skills such as adding (when the consumer wants to buy more than one item) and subtracting (giving change to the consumer). My students were very excited when their buddy bought an item from them.\r\n\r\nMy students were very excited when they first saw the materials. They couldn't wait to get started on their projects. My students wanted to dive straight into making products but I needed to teach them the basics of of Economics first.\r\n\r\nI don't really have next steps for my students because it's the end of the school year. However, I do have next steps for this lesson in the future. To build a community connection, I plan on finding local small business owners to come and speak to my students to share their small business journey. I'm hoping that this project may help spark ideas for future young entrepreneurs.","fullyFundedDate":1773791741040,"projectUrl":"project/pbl-in-first-grade/10112876/","projectTitle":"PBL in First Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Higa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2233698_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692584726113","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2233698"},{"teacherId":5849712,"projectId":10111886,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom through DonorsChoose! Your generous donations of white art paper, cardstock, tagboard, and Posca paint pens provided students with meaningful creative opportunities and high-quality materials they otherwise may not have experienced.\r\n\r\nStudents used these supplies to create Hawaiian-themed greeting cards for all occasions. They selected subjects inspired by Hawaiʻi, including ʻōhiʻa lehua, pua kenikeni, crown flowers, plumeria, hibiscus, kalo plants, coconut trees, and ʻōpihi shells. Through this project, students explored both artistic techniques and cultural inspiration.\r\n\r\nUsing watercolor paints, colored pencils, Sharpie markers, and Posca paint pens, students learned how to create artwork with focal points, backgrounds, and detailed enhancements. The Posca paint pens were especially exciting because many students had never used this professional-quality medium before. Students took great care with their work and were proud to experiment with new techniques and creative details.\r\n\r\nOnce completed, the artwork was scanned or photographed and uploaded into personalized greeting card templates for printing. Students were thrilled to see their original artwork transformed into professionally printed cards. Original artwork will be sent home, and families can also choose to reprint additional cards from the saved digital images.\r\n\r\nYour generosity encouraged creativity, confidence, and cultural connection in our classroom. It will spark a level of engagement not seen before. The laminating machine is mostly use by the adults because we do not want 3 years olds sticking their fingers in the machine but the students have enjoyed helping in the process by giving the papers to the teacher to laminate. Students also help with pushing down the handle on the binding machine. When the books are put together we enjoy reading it as a class and looking through our own made books.\r\n\r\n We also had a variety of materials that use velcro in our classroom. Velcro has helped to make communication boards for our students to communicate in the classroom. Velcro is also used to help with fine motor strengthening activities in the classroom. The paper is being put to good use by allowing us to make crafts for our PBL project and build our writing and drawing skills.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher, I greatly appreciate the technology wipes because it allows me to wipe down their iPads that we use weekly for iReady.
