This project allowed my third-grade special education haumāna to transform from passive learners into active contributors. They saw firsthand that they have the power to create a positive ripple effect throughout our school, and that is a lesson that stays with a child forever.\r\n\r\nThe students took full ownership of the process. They carefully sorted the supplies and worked together to cut out the uplifting notes they had written for their peers. Because we didn't have enough kits for the entire school, the students had to practice critical thinking and empathy to decide where the need was greatest. They ultimately chose to donate the kits to the other third-grade classes and our Special Education department (K - 8th grade). \r\n\r\nThe impact of your gift goes beyond hygiene; it has laid a foundation of confidence and self-worth for my students. These may seem like small actions, but they reflect the values we are working so hard to build: respect, responsibility, unity, and care for one another. Thanks to you, we are now able to recognize and celebrate these moments so students know their choices truly matter.\r\n\r\nWhen we introduced the program, the excitement from students was immediate. They were not just interested in the incentives; they were genuinely engaged in understanding what it means to live out Nā Mea Waiwai. Many students shared examples of how they could show these values, and it created a sense of pride and positivity that has carried into their daily interactions. More than anything, students are beginning to feel seen, valued, and encouraged for who they are becoming.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are excited to continue growing this work and begin expanding the program beyond middle school to the rest of our campus. It brings mobility, creativity, and productivity to our outdoor classroom. The students were excited when they saw the materials coming in and even more excited to see that what was inside was for them and not just for me. The gloves were probably the biggest hit!\r\n\r\nRecently Hawaii has experienced a series of Kona Low storms that has brought a lot of rain our way. The outdoor storage shed has kept the students journals safe and dry through it all! It fits all the students journals in their class bins neatly; two to each shelf. Another added benefit is the ability to lock it which is helpful since our classroom is outdoor and has no doors to lock and keep are things from being tampered with. This gives the students peace of mind knowing their personal thoughts and assignments are safe. I have even had colleagues ask where I got it from because they want one too! \r\n\r\nThe dry erase assorted color markers helps separate information when taking notes and it makes things exciting for students. On such a small board notes can sometimes get lost; everything starts to jumble together. Having assorted colors helps separate topics and supporting facts from main ideas and so on and so forth. The erasers work wonders especially since we use the whiteboard everyday to write down the days moon phase and how it affects farming, the days task, the location, and what Hawaiian value we used in class that day. \r\n\r\nThe pencils are a life saver. One of the biggest challenges in middle school is students not having the materials they need to be successful. My students know where to go when they are in need of writing materials. \r\n\r\nThe mobile desk gives me extra work space for when I need to grade journals or plan lessons. Prior to this I was placing their class boxes on the ground and bending over to pick them up and then balancing the graded books on my lap till I was finished and could return them to the box. \r\n\r\nThe kids love the variety of gloves. They appreciate that there is a glove for every unique individual. They are purposeful and fit well. The students use them daily for various tasks, raking, digging, weeding, harvesting and planting. The rubber on the palm of the gloves keep their hands from getting poked by pesky weeds, bitten by insects, or getting blisters from the wooden handles on the shovels and hoes. They fit comfortably and don't fall off in the middle of a task.","fullyFundedDate":1771733500796,"projectUrl":"project/outdoor-classroom/10109877/","projectTitle":"Outdoor Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nahooikaika-Medeiros","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10362445"},{"teacherId":3784127,"projectId":10110805,"letterContent":"Mahalo nui loa for your generous donations.
