As a team, we spent a lot of time creating together, talking story, and building pilina (relationships). Many of our projects were rooted in Hawaiian practices like moʻolelo (storytelling), kapa (bark cloth) making, and lei making, and also incorporated lessons from Choose Love.\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, they were excited about the different tools and what they could use the materials for. They started to ask me if they could do certain things and they shared ideas for future projects. Having access to these resources has given students more confidence and just a wider range of possibilities to create, collaborate, and take ownership of their work.\r\n\r\nWe have already used the cardboard cutter, glue guns, labeler and other tools to build prototypes for our clients before creating final products and to work on other projects and exhibitions to teach families some of the traditional skills students learned and practiced. I'm not sure what we would do without the glue guns now, we use them so frequently. The smaller materials have also been valuable for relationship-building activities. Students use markers, glue, scissors, and other supplies to create posters and complete collaborative projects together. These activities really have helped strengthen social-emotional learning skills while building the trust and unity needed to carry out larger undertakings.\r\n\r\nOur second semester project, making personalized leis for the entire 8th-grade class and staff for graduation, was a massive undertaking. Students worked together to create something meaningful that celebrated and honored individuals in their school community. Other donated supplies, such as the paint holder, tape, and drop cloths, supported a gift-making project inspired by ancient Hawaiian kapa-making traditions. Students chose someone who demonstrated compassion in action to highlight, create a gift for that person, and write a moʻolelo expressing their gratitude and appreciation for them.\r\n\r\nThe real goal is not just what we built, but the sense of belonging we hoped to build within each student. The more tools and materials we have, the more opportunities students have to work together, strengthen relationships, and positively impact others. Mahalo for being part of our team and community. Our students have been deeply impacted by all of these learning experiences, and the sense of togetherness we built throughout the year will carry with them into next year and beyond.","fullyFundedDate":1771716294765,"projectUrl":"project/pbl-project-build-a-little-talk-a-lot/10106486/","projectTitle":"PBL (Project: Build a Little… Talk a Lot)","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Keanini","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8837160"},{"teacherId":10294091,"projectId":10108126,"letterContent":"Mahalo for supporting our project, Podcast Power: Amplifying Student Voices. Because of your generosity, our students have been given a powerful opportunity to share their stories, ideas, and perspectives in ways that go far beyond traditional classroom assignments. The podcasting equipment transformed our classroom into a space where students became storytellers, interviewers, advocates, and creators. Through recording and editing their own podcasts, students strengthened their speaking, listening, writing, and critical thinking skills while learning how to communicate effectively with an audience.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most exciting for students is having a real platform for their voices to be heard. Many students who are typically hesitant to speak in front of large groups found confidence behind a microphone. They carefully planned their scripts, practiced speaking clearly, and took pride in producing a polished final product. The technology made learning feel authentic because students were creating something meaningful that could be shared with others, rather than simply completing an assignment for a grade.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who often struggle to participate in class discussions truly thrived during this project. The microphone gave them a sense of purpose and confidence, allowing them to express ideas they might not have otherwise shared. Students explored topics connected to their identities, communities, and passions, helping them realize that their experiences and perspectives matter. Thanks to your support, our scholars learned that their voices have the power to inform, inspire, and create positive change. The supplies you provided helped our students successfully complete their Project-Based Learning (PBL) project from start to finish.\r\n\r\nDuring our introductory lesson, students participated in a gallery walk where they examined different images and left comments on posters. They were able to identify problems shown in the pictures and use their observations to help develop our driving question. These posters remained displayed throughout the quarter, allowing students to revisit them, reflect on their classmates' ideas, and deepen their understanding of the project.\r\n\r\nLater in the quarter, students created informational posters about the Pacific Garbage Patch. They were excited to use the markers and coloring supplies provided through your donation. Many students shared that their own markers had been lost or dried out, and they appreciated having access to a variety of vibrant colors they had never used before. The supplies also ensured that every student, regardless of what they had at home, could fully participate and express their creativity.\r\n\r\nThe markers and art supplies helped students produce colorful, high-quality posters that they were proud to share with their families. Parents were impressed with the final products, and students felt a strong sense of accomplishment.\r\n\r\nLastly, students were able to use the markers to complete a cultural mural that they had been working on earlier in the year. The wide variety of colors helped them add important details and bring their artwork to life. Students took great pride in finishing this collaborative piece, which celebrates their culture, heritage, and creativity. Using the donated rock and mineral samples along with the testing kits, students conducted both rock and mineral labs where they investigated different physical properties such as color, hardness, streak, magnetism, luster, fluorescence, and texture. Students were excited to use testing tools to test and compare the samples. It was rewarding to watch students work collaboratively, make observations, ask questions, and think like real scientists during the lab investigations.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were immediately drawn to the variety of rocks and minerals included in the kits. Many were eager to touch, observe, and begin testing the samples right away. The hands-on experience created a high level of engagement and curiosity throughout the lessons. Students especially enjoyed using the testing tools to discover clues about each sample and determine how the properties differed from one another.\r\n\r\nThe next step in our learning process is for students to compare the properties they collected during the labs to an expert identification chart. Using their observations and data, students will work to identify the specific names of the rocks and minerals they tested.
