Your generosity has already made a meaningful impact in our Marine Science classroom here in Hawaiʻi.\r\n\r\nOur students have been using the new materials to investigate local limu (marine algae) through hands-on scientific fieldwork and data collection. The measuring tape reels have helped students practice creating transects and collecting ecological data just like real marine scientists. Students used the calculators to analyze and compare data from different limu samples, helping them build confidence with scientific thinking and quantitative skills. The herbarium paper has allowed students to carefully preserve limu specimens they collected and identified, creating scientific records of local species found in Hawaiʻi's marine environments.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting moments was when students realized they were using the same kinds of tools and methods that researchers and conservationists use in the field. Many of my students learn best through active, hands-on experiences, so seeing the classroom transform into a real scientific workspace immediately increased engagement and curiosity. Several students who are usually hesitant during traditional lessons became leaders during our limu collection and classification activities.\r\n\r\nThe science posters and laminating sheets have also helped us create a more interactive and student-centered classroom environment. We laminated identification guides and student-created reference materials so they can be reused throughout the year during labs and station activities. Students were especially excited to see their own work displayed and treated like authentic scientific resources instead of disposable assignments.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building students' understanding of Hawaiʻi's marine ecosystems by comparing limu species, analyzing patterns in biodiversity, and discussing the importance of native algae in coastal food webs and cultural practices. Students will continue practicing data collection, species identification, and scientific communication as they prepare presentations and lab reflections connected to our marine science units.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping create meaningful, place-based science experiences for our students. Your support is helping students see that science is not something distant found only in textbooks—it is something connected directly to their own communities, coastlines, and lives.","fullyFundedDate":1771554695524,"projectUrl":"project/from-limu-to-lab-data-supporting-marine/10104394/","projectTitle":"From Limu to Lab Data: Supporting Marine Science in Hawaiʻi","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Fernandez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9916494_orig.jpg?crop=408,408,x475,y417&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753815231597","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9916494"},{"teacherId":10255339,"projectId":10106308,"letterContent":"For this project, students learned the practical skill of wrapping a sprained ankle. You canʻt separate the two in order to be an effective teacher. \r\nStudents have learned about their ʻaumakua and have made pieces of art to depict the diety that their ohana honors. They learned how to make bamboo stamps, creating designs that represent something in their life. Theyʻve done collaborative work by putting together mosaic pieces to honor their queen. They learned to sew and made their own costumes for hula performances. Theyʻve carved rubber stamps and created beautiful cards to give away as gifts. They were able to work with wooden boards, creating a konane, or Hawaiian checkerboard that were given away as gifts when hosting students from other countries. This list is just to mention a few. I am so excited to share how much your generosity has impacted our classroom. Thanks to your support, my students now have their own sketchbooks, and they have quickly become an essential part of our daily creative practice.\r\n\r\nWe use the sketchbooks as a space for exploration, reflection, and growth. One memorable moment was during a recent project where students were asked to create observational drawings of everyday objects. At first, many were hesitant, worried about making mistakes. But because the sketchbooks feel personal and low-pressure, they began to take risks—experimenting with shading, perspective, and even adding their own creative twists. Watching their confidence grow page by page has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first received their sketchbooks, their reactions were priceless. There was a buzz of excitement throughout the room—students flipped through the blank pages, already imagining what they would create. Several students immediately began sketching without any prompt, eager to make the book their own. It was clear right away that these sketchbooks were more than just supplies—they were opportunities.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to build on this momentum. Our next step is a mixed-media project where students will combine drawing, collage, and written reflection within their sketchbooks. This will allow them to not only develop their artistic skills but also express their ideas and personal stories in deeper ways. Over time, these sketchbooks will become a visual record of their growth and creativity throughout the year.\r\n\r\nYour support has truly made a difference in how my students engage with art. Seeing their handwritten letters, it is clear they understand the value of this resource. One student perfectly captured our goal by writing that while it can be difficult to be away from a phone, the locker is helping them \"focus better on schoolwork and pay more attention in class.\"\r\n\r\nAs we head into the final seven weeks of the school year—a critical time for my seniors—the Luxor Locker has become our anchor. Their reaction was priceless—there is a unique spark that happens when students realize people they've never met believe in their creative potential.\r\n\r\nWe have already integrated these games into our weekly routine. In a recent class, instead of a traditional lecture on composition, students used the new interactive cards to \"race\" each other in building balanced designs. I watched a group of students who usually struggle with confidence start debating which design choice was more impactful, laughing while they actively problem-solved. It has transformed our classroom into a high-energy \"artist's lab\" where making a mistake is just part of the game.\r\n\r\nThe next step for my students is to take the strategies they've practiced through these games and apply them to their first major independent project of the semester. My students have been making extensive use of the whiteboards and dry erase markers for many of their assignments that include modeling, computing and deriving equations in math, and analyzing data. Many of the lab materials, like the force probe, hook weights, and spring toys have been useful in demonstrating concepts through labs as well. \r\n\r\nAt the start of the school year, I made it fairly clear that the room I was assigned in was a biology classroom, and so there might not be very much dedicated lab equipment for physics. We had to improvise and do things with just metersticks, stopwatches, and DIY setups, but we got through mostly fine. My students definitely had a lot of fun playing around with the new tools and collecting actually accurate data for once! \r\n\r\nAs for the next steps, it's definitely going to be continuing to build up my physics classroom materials. A lot of what I have right now gets the job done, but I know that newer, more advanced materials could offer my students a richer and deeper learning environment. I think aiming for a class set of force probes, and maybe investing in a few pressure sensors may be a reasonable goal to set going into next year, as that set of equipment already is at or even exceeds the spending limit.","fullyFundedDate":1762048884571,"projectUrl":"project/inclusive-physics-classroom/9867770/","projectTitle":"Inclusive Physics Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Tran","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9829527"},{"teacherId":8978030,"projectId":9774644,"letterContent":"My students and I are very grateful for people like you and for your kindness.
