  • Math Manipulatives, Graphing Calculators, Phone-Free Classroom, and Snacks/Water for Well-Being

    Funded Aug 21, 2025

It is with great excitement that I share the news that our special education math project with Donors Coose has funded.

Thank you all for helping me create change in the lives of my students. When they succeed it makes everything better, and that's why I teach. Yes, it requires take-home work, long days (usually 7 to 6 for me) some time on the weekends, and a lot of organization with 3 curriculums to prep and another three to learn and tutor, -breath- but it makes my heart sing when they struggle and dig deep; then get it. And we they really get material, the joy that fills the room is amazing.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simonen

  • SPED Math Classroom Needs Calculators and Geometry Manipulatives!

    Funded Mar 7, 2025

Having geometry manipulatives in the classroom has made a huge difference in the students' participation.

Magnetic graphing boards allows each student to work on a task at their desk or or the whiteboard. The whiteboard circle protractor let's me walk around the room and create new circles with new problems on their individual white boards in a timely manner so I can make 3-4 rounds per class period. Without additional whiteboard markers none of this could be possible.

In algebra the calculators are used for quizzes and sometimes homework. I encourage the students to try without calculators firat, then only use it on the problems you need help with, and they are following instruction and doing much better.

Thank you donors for making my tasks as a teacher simplified, fluid, and less time consuming.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simonen

  • Comfortable, Creative, and Collaborative Classroom for SPED Math Grades 9-10

    Funded Jan 20, 2025

Research shows a surge in classroom learning and a reduction in misbehavior when classrooms have seating options other than desks and chairs. My atudents love the yoga balls as seating and the sofa as a reward zone. For those who love to fidget, the ball allows them a bounce and movement they desire without interrupting class time.

Our new lighting options reduce my students' time under florescent lighting and take glare off their screens.

The cardstock boards, markers, crayons, and gluesticka promote collaborative work on projects that took geometry from black and white on paper, to 3D models students measured and built themselves in small groups. On my year end survey, they all said the 3D village they built was the best thing they did all year.

Thank you for your continued support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simonen

  • Special Education Math Lab With Tech Updates and Inviting Reading Room

    Funded Sep 1, 2024

The students at Waimanalo Intermediate are grateful for your contribution to their comfy reading space, with seating that provides a place to get away from their desks and feel at home while studying.

Organization is key for books and journals, and the shelf dividers are great, as are the plastic folders that can be recycled for most likely 2-3 school years to reduce paper use and resource waste. We are a planet conscious classroom and use as little disposable resources as possible, he's the projection camera-- rather than paper notes, the dry erase writing posters rather than paper, and compostable cups for the 3-galloon water bottle which also saves us from throwing away water bottles daily. Thanks again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simonen

  • Recess Balls for Outdoor, DryErase Supplies for Indoor Community Engagement

    Funded Aug 12, 2024

The Special Education students at Waimanalo Intermediate are grateful to have your support in growing their recess equipment options. The class received 2 volleyballs, a basketball, 2 soccer balls, a kick ball, and a 6-person paddleboard set. This allows the students to be active and learn to work together on teams, share, be fair, and take turns, as well as being respectful and inclusive of others.

No longer do they sit on the sidewalk for recess, they are up establishing games and being team players. It's good to see them learn about each other and often coaching one another on how to be a better player. This is also good practice for their after-school sports leagues.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simonen

  • First-year Teacher needs Teaching Tools for Special Education Classroom.

    Funded Jul 28, 2024

The students in Special Education at Waimanalo Intermediate thank you for your generous donations. The students have individual as well as group white board options. They are using the chair pads and fidget bands daily. The math games have given them fun learning opportunities and promote group engagement.

Supplies for daily activities and learning enhancement have been put to great use and allow students and their families to not worry about purchasing their own pencils, dry erase markers, graph paper, filler paper, construction paper, and folders.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simonen

My Special Education Math classroom is shared with our Special Education Science teacher. Our students are in 9th and 10th grades and are at varied levels of learning challenges. They are kind, eager, and able, they just require teaching styles, modeling, and conversations that are different from those found in general classroom settings. We are learning at a different pace and taking one day at a time. Thank you for being their for our SPED classroom. Your generosity is much appreciated.
