After spending the last two years teaching in a fully self-contained special education setting, I am now expanding and refining my instructional practices as I transition back into a general education environment. With this shift comes a unique blend of challenges and opportunities, and the resources you've provided will make a meaningful difference in creating a supportive and engaging learning space.\r\nThese supplies will contribute directly to building a structured and predictable daily routine for my students. Tools such as the magnets for our classroom calendar and the magnetic pencil and pen holders will help us stay organized and reduce transitions, which is essential for young learners. The sensory and fidget items will serve as positive reinforcement and regulation supports, helping students stay focused and motivated throughout the day. Additionally, classroom tools like the calendar, student mailboxes, and lap desk will support daily learning tasks, encourage independence, and enhance overall classroom flow.\r\nBy thoughtfully integrating these materials into our routines, I am able to create an environment that meets the diverse needs of my students—one that is nurturing, engaging, and structured for success. In our first two weeks back from summer, and the first two weeks of Grade 5 in the new school year, our students began their 3D printing journey by not knowing that they would be 3D printing! They began by designing and creating a personalized keyring with the idea that 'if only we could actually make it in real life'. Initially it was approached with the expected 'cool, we get to design something'.The process was nothing short of magical for them — watching an idea evolve from a thought in their minds, to a sketch on paper, to a digital design, and finally then the realisation that we had a 3D printer in the school, let alone in the classroom and that they would printing it into a tangible object they could hold in their hands. 'That's a 3D printer!? I thought it was a drink dispenser.' 'It looks like a microwave!' 'It's like an Xbox mini fridge!'\r\nThis experience has been invaluable. Students have learned not only design and technical skills, but also the power of personalization and creativity. They are beginning to see how their imagination can turn into something real. Not just something on paper. Not just something you turn in, or display on a wall, or on mom's fridge. But something real that can be used! Even more, the project sparked important conversations about environmental impact — both the positives of small-scale production that minimizes waste, and the awareness of potential negatives like fumes, along with strategies to mitigate them responsibly. 'We can't just print in class, everyone will be poisoned by the fumes!' 'No. We can attach a hose which can suck the fumes out the window.' 'That's why there's a hole and flap.' 'But what about the environment? We need some kind of filter...' the conversations became real and the students without even thinking and without any prompts began to problem solve!!!\r\nThe excitement was and has continued to be contagious! Students are already brainstorming \"what's next\" — from creating classroom signs, to game counters, learning resources for math, to imagining how 3D printing might one day solve big real-world problems. They even discussed how the wasted plastic could be reused in art projects. The sense of ownership, pride, and innovation this project has sparked is something we could not have achieved without your support. And this has been all in the first few weeks of school!\r\nThank you for making me the cool teacher with 'printer from the future'! But I am slightly regretting as now I have an endless request list from other teachers regarding what projects can be done throughout the school all the way from kindergarten!\r\nBut in all seriousness - Thank you for believing in our students and for giving them the tools to dream bigger, think deeper, and create boldly. This 3D printer has opened doors to new learning opportunities that will have lasting effects on their education and curiosity.\r\n\r\nMahalo nui loa,\r\nGerard Espiritu\r\nHokulani Grade 5 Teacher","fullyFundedDate":1729388348596,"projectUrl":"project/imagination-in-3d-designing-our-dreams/8886621/","projectTitle":"Imagination in 3D: Designing Our Dreams!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Espiritu","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9806807"},{"teacherId":3782715,"projectId":9161955,"letterContent":"On behalf of our preschool special education team, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for your generous donation. Because of you, our students have been immersed in rich, hands-on STEM experiences that spark curiosity, collaboration, and joyful learning every day.\r\n\r\nOne of the first projects we tackled with your donated supplies was our Bird Nest Engineering Challenge. We began by tapping into students' prior knowledge, asking them what they knew about bird nests, different styles and materials, and why nests matter for survival. After exploring real-world examples and watching informational videos, students brainstormed, sketched blueprints, and got to work. Using items like pipe cleaners, Play-Doh, straws, and cups, they built both trees and nests designed to support peep marshmallow \"birds.\" The excitement was contagious as they tested their designs for strength and balance. During our class reflection, one student said, \"I never knew building could be so fun and tricky.\"\r\n\r\nIn another lesson, we explored how light can be used to communicate over a distance. In the \"Secret Signals\" activity, students built simple devices and sent coded messages using flashlights and colored markers. This project was a favorite for many; it combined problem-solving with a touch of mystery and play. It was amazing to see students apply science in such a creative way, practicing both collaboration and communication skills.\r\n\r\nMost recently, we investigated shadows and the movement of light with our \"Moving Shadows\" lesson. Using flashlights and paper gnomes, students experimented with how changing the light's position alters the direction and length of shadows. They connected their discoveries to how the sun moves across the sky during the day. The flashlights you helped fund made these discoveries possible. Students were engaged and full of wonder as they recreated what they saw outdoors right at their desks.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, science in our classroom has come to life. These experiences go far beyond memorizing facts; they encourage students to ask questions, explore, test their thinking, and reflect on what they've learned.\r\n\r\nWe couldn't do this without you, and we are so deeply grateful.
