Our students learn so much more when they are engaged in their learning! This program immerses the students in the Hawaiian Culture and integrates the different content areas. Our program starts with students learning about the language, values and music of the Hawaiian Culture. They read mo`olelo or legends that teach them about the beliefs and values of the Hawaiian people as well as the genre and literary elements. We also integrate the science by learning about the uniqueness and variety of our native plants and animals in Hawaii due to our geography. Our students will then write their own mo`olelo and then use the hardcover blank book to publish their mo`olelo. They love adding the features of a real published book! Students will use the art supplies to create their own illustrations. It is something they can keep to show their children.
After the mo`olelo are written, one story from each class will be chosen to be put into a play that will be performed by the students in the class. Students will help to create the props, narrate and act in the play. We will use the lavalier microphones to make sure students voices are clear and communicate the story line of the play. Depending on where we are in the pandemic, we will either video the performance for parents or invite them to view the performance live.
