When the greenhouses and tools arrived, students gathered around with wide eyes and big smiles, immediately asking, \"When can we build?\" and \"What are we planting first?\" They eagerly worked together to construct the living trellises, measuring, designing, and problem-solving as a team. One powerful moment was watching students gently transplant seedlings into the greenhouse beds, carefully tucking soil around each plant and talking about how these plants would provide food, medicine, and seeds for the future. They weren't just gardening — they were stepping into their roles as caretakers of ʻāina.\r\n\r\nWe are now using the greenhouses daily to observe plant growth cycles, compare soil health, start native and canoe plants from seed, and experiment with natural pest management. The trellises have become living science lessons as climbing plants like lilikoi stretch upward, showing students how structure and support help living things thrive. Students are journaling their observations, collecting data, and making connections between healthy soil, healthy plants, and healthy communities. The excitement they feel when they see the first flowers or harvest their own food is something truly special — it's confidence growing alongside the plants.\r\n\r\nNext, students will save seeds from their strongest plants, expand composting efforts to enrich our soil, and share what they've learned with younger classes and families. They are beginning to understand sustainability not just as a concept, but as a responsibility and privilege. Your support has helped create more than garden beds and trellises — it has nurtured leadership, stewardship, and a deepened sense of aloha ʻāina that will continue to grow for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1763415913223,"projectUrl":"project/ina-connections-growing-purpose-and-s/9784505/","projectTitle":"ʻĀina Connections: Growing Purpose and Sustainability Together","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dani","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8829285_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y201&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1673068604754","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8829285"},{"teacherId":10275922,"projectId":9813088,"letterContent":"We thank you so much for all that you have contributed to making our class more functional, fun, and inspiring. Your thoughtful contribution has already made a significant and positive impact on our learning environment and, most importantly, on the development and engagement of our wonderful students.\r\nOur students are actively involved during story time. The vibrant illustrations and rhythmic text of the Brown Bear series naturally draw them in, and having their own copy allows them to feel a sense of ownership and connection to the story. This tangible connection fosters a more active and enthusiastic participation during literacy time. Our student's faces lit up when they saw the new books of some of their favorite stories. They were each excited to have their own copies and could individually turn the pages and follow along.\r\nStudent engagement has increased through the captivating stories that hold their attention for longer periods, fostering a love for narratives and language. Students with Autism often need \"fidgets\" and sensory items to help them stay focused and feel secure. Students are now able to sustain attention for longer periods of time during circle time and work center time. \r\nYour donation of the literacy materials and fidgets/sensory items have been invaluable in supporting early literacy skills in a way that is accessible and engaging for our students with diverse learning needs and particularly beneficial for our students who learn best through sensory exploration. We are utilizing these resources to build pre-reading skills and build a classroom community. By making literacy fun and accessible, this has laid the foundation for a lifelong appreciation for books. Manipulating the materials has also strengthened hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and sustained attention skills. \r\nOne student who is non-verbal has started making new sounds, pointing to pictures in the storybooks, and following along with the stories page by page. Another student who struggles with participating during non preferred activities now participates more willingly in group activities while holding fidget/sensory items.\r\nThank you once again for your incredible support.
