Instead of only reading about math concepts, students are now able to touch, move, and explore the materials while solving problems. We are currently using these manipulatives during our lessons on fractions and mixed numbers, where students use fraction pieces to visually compare, add, and multiply fractions. One memorable moment happened when a student who usually struggles with fractions excitedly said, \"Now I can see how the pieces fit together!\" That moment showed how powerful hands-on learning can be.\r\n\r\n When the students first saw the new materials, their faces immediately lit up with excitement. They were curious and eager to start exploring. Many of them said it felt like they were doing a puzzle while learning math. The manipulatives helped them become more confident because they could physically see the relationships between numbers instead of just imagining them.\r\n\r\n Moving forward, we will continue using these resources to deepen students' understanding of math concepts through collaborative group activities, problem-solving tasks, and real-world applications. Students will work together to solve multi-step problems, explain their thinking, and build stronger mathematical reasoning skills. Your support is helping create a classroom where learning is engaging, interactive, and accessible for every student. Because of you, my students are building not only stronger math skills but also greater confidence in their ability to learn and succeed.\r\n\r\n Thank you for making a lasting difference in our classroom!","fullyFundedDate":1759760178125,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-learning-brighter-futures-eng/9785934/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Learning, Brighter Futures: Engaging Students with Manipulatives","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Paura","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9969001"},{"teacherId":10250924,"projectId":9780691,"letterContent":"Mahalo for your contribution, your donations bought a lot of gardening materials which students used to start a school māla (garden). Additionally, the new water bottles are a wonderful addition to our desks, ensuring that every student stays hydrated and focused throughout our busy school day.\r\n\r\nWe are also thrilled to integrate the new games and STEM kits into our curriculum. The engineering craft kits are sparking amazing creativity, while the multidisciplinary games—ranging from Scrabble and parts-of-speech activities to math-based Mancala—make learning both interactive and rigorous. Your generosity has made a meaningful difference in our English Language Development (ELD) pull-out classrooms.\r\n\r\nThe snacks are used intentionally as motivation and positive reinforcement during learning. Students earn snacks for participating in lessons, taking academic risks, collaborating with peers, and demonstrating perseverance when learning a new language. These incentives help create a welcoming and supportive environment where students feel encouraged to try, speak, and engage (sometimes even when they feel unsure or nervous).\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the snacks, their faces lit up with excitement. For many of them, it immediately reduced anxiety and helped them feel more comfortable in the classroom. The snacks quickly became more than just a treat, they became a symbol of encouragement and effort.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, students are more focused, engaged, and willing to participate in speaking, reading, and writing activities. As we continue our current ELD lessons, students will use this positive momentum to build academic language, practice speaking with confidence, and strengthen comprehension skills. The supportive classroom culture you helped create will continue to motivate students as they work toward becoming confident, successful learners.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students not only snacks, but encouragement, motivation, and a sense that their learning matters. Thank you again for these amazing materials and for enabling my students to make the most of their education and their gifts that they have been blessed with! I have nine students now, and more than half of them have delayed motor functioning, so these adapted scissors have been AWESOME, enabling my students to complete arts and crafts as well as the cut and paste TeachTown activities that we do daily. When we need a brain break, my students are DELIGHTED to make structures using the magnetic letters, tiles, and PEOPLE that were provided for in this grant. My higher functioning students can spell out their names with the magnet tiles, while the others just practice their fine motor skills making patterns, towers, and such. You can see in the larger group shot in chairs my students holding their spinning light wands. We use these in our online speech lessons where they \"speak\" \"Ready, setl, GO!\" in our LAMP/tablet talking AAC device, with the wands being activated when the child presses \"Go!\" Of course, we always need clear plastic bins from Lakeshore! This adventure, photographing the plants in our back yard, has brought a collective awareness and positive collaboration with students working together and taking an interest in learning more about the land, it's fauna, and how to preserve our home island. \r\n\r\nStudents have also been working on portraiture and how to express themselves both behind and in front of the lens.
