Students are ecstatic to return back after a year and a half of distance learning. To hold and read books in their hands is something that fills them with so much gratitude. Students have been running through the books we have and are eager for more high interest books. Almost all of the books I requested came from the surveying student's interest. These books include: Animal books, I Survived books, Diary of a Wimpy kid and many other fiction and non fiction titles. Having books students' choose creates agency. They know they have a stake in their learning. They become more engaged and more motivated to take on challenges in the classroom. In addition to student's requests, I have added books about Hawaii and Hawaiian culture, books based in the Marshall islands, and books written by and about people of color. Our classroom is full students with different backgrounds. I want our library to reflect the students in the room. I hope to have books that remind them of their culture, their homelands, their joy and their struggles.
