We do the \"Hair Love\" program every year during Black History Month and every year it gets better and better. This year, we had a local salon owner come and talk to the students about cosmetology school and how to maintain healthy hair. The students really enjoyed the hands on aspect of the program. They were able to practice detangling, flat ironing, and styling different hair types. Next year, I hope to bring in a barber as well. Students worked in pairs, quickly jotting down and sketching ideas for an upcoming story writing assignment. The boards allow for immediate revision and experimentation without the fear of making a permanent mistake, encouraging every student, even the most hesitant writers, to participate actively and share their thought processes. This shift has turned simple idea generation into a dynamic, hands-on learning experience that involves movement and group discussion.\r\n\r\nThe moment the boxes were opened was truly a joy to witness. Their eyes widened at the sight of new, vibrant colors—a significant upgrade from our older, often dried-out supplies. One student immediately grabbed a fresh marker and spontaneously drew a huge, smiling sun on their new board, exclaiming, \"Look, it works perfectly!\" The ability to have their own set of high-quality materials has instilled a sense of ownership and pride in their work. This initial excitement has translated directly into increased engagement and focus during all activities, showing that sometimes, the simplest materials can spark the greatest creative energy.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, our students are taking the brainstorming ideas generated with these materials and developing them into a multi-paragraph narrative writing project. The next step is to use the crayons and markers to create visual storyboards on paper, mapping out the setting and key moments of their stories before drafting begins. This visual planning process, fueled by the materials you provided, will help them organize their thoughts and create richer, more descriptive narratives.
