Receiving them during the last month of the school year made the experience feel like a special end-of-year literacy celebration. Since student checkout had already ended, I used the books for an in-library \"book tasting\" activity instead of sending them home. Students were able to sample different Dog Man titles, read Chapter One, talk with classmates, and get excited about books they will be able to enjoy again when they return in the fall. Your generosity helped turn the end of the school year into a joyful reminder that reading can be fun, social, and meaningful.\r\n\r\nThese new books also allowed us to teach and practice important literacy skills in an engaging way. What began as a simple book tasting became a much richer lesson when we read the first chapter of Dog Man: Fetch-22 together and paused at a cliffhanger. Students identified the setting, discussed character behavior, explored vocabulary words such as \"bonkers,\" \"bungle,\" \"annoyed,\" and \"predict,\" and wrote a two-sentence summary of Chapter One. They then made predictions about what would happen next and compared their predictions to what actually happened when the chapter continued. This helped students practice summarizing, vocabulary development, inferencing, prediction, and comprehension in a way that felt exciting instead of routine.\r\n\r\nThe impact was especially powerful because students who may not always see themselves as eager readers were immediately drawn in by the humor, pictures, familiar characters, and fast-paced storytelling. Classes including Ms. Ward's, Ms. Mahone's, Ms. Hunter's, and Mr. Omotayo's students participated in versions of this activity, and some students even extended their thinking by writing an exciting \"hook\" to convince someone else to read the chapter. The books created real conversation, laughter, and focused reading time. Most importantly, they gave students a positive reading experience at the close of the school year and something wonderful to look forward to when they return. Thank you for helping us build excitement, confidence, and stronger readers through books our students genuinely love.","fullyFundedDate":1773871714420,"projectUrl":"project/help-put-more-books-into-students-hands/10061691/","projectTitle":"Help Put More Books Into Students' Hands","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jean","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6436123"},{"teacherId":2505050,"projectId":9900365,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of our hydroponic garden, seeds, and books. From planting the seeds to seeing the first sprouts appear, they have been excited to observe each stage of growth. They take pride in helping care for the garden—checking the water, monitoring the plants, and making sure everything is thriving.\r\n\r\nBeyond the excitement, this experience has deepened their understanding of how plants grow and what they need to survive. The hands-on learning has sparked curiosity, encouraged responsibility, and brought our science lessons to life in a way that textbooks alone never could.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping us create an engaging, meaningful learning experience.
