The items purchased will help prevent the spread of viruses. Students routinely get hand sanitizer upon entering the media center and at the end of each session, along with wiping down the tables. I am happy to report that my classes have consistently done just that! \r\nWhen these tablets arrived, 95% of my students were struggling with foundational reading skills. The research is clear; students who don't learn to read proficiently by the end of third grade are at serious risk of never catching up. My students were already behind that benchmark. We needed to act fast, and we needed the right resources to do it.\r\nTablets and other electronic devices became the cornerstone of our small group instruction and independent practice. Students used them to listen to fluent reading models, practice their own fluency, and access STEM-based content in Science and Social Studies. Learning didn't stop at dismissal, students took these habits home, putting in the work every single day. Many students were also offered an opportunity to take these tablets home and continue studying. \r\nThe results speak for themselves. Over the past two years, my students have demonstrated extraordinary growth, not once, but consistently, year after year. My principal took notice, and I am proud to share his letter of congratulations recognizing the progress this class has made.\r\nThis project was never just about tablets. It was about a group of eager, hard-working kids who deserved a fair shot and donors who believed in them. Many of our students, including English Language Learners and students with learning deficiencies, struggle with understanding abstract math concepts. The fraction bars have helped make fractions more concrete and visual. One memorable classroom moment happened during a lesson comparing fractions. Students worked in partners to build fractions using the bars and explain their thinking to one another. An ELL student who previously struggled to participate confidently was able to use the fraction pieces to show that 1/2 was greater than 1/4 and proudly explained his reasoning using both visuals and academic vocabulary. It was exciting to see students actively engaged, collaborating, and building confidence in math.\r\n\r\n When the students first saw the materials, they were immediately excited and curious. Many students wanted to touch, build, and explore with the fraction bars right away. Because the materials are hands-on and colorful, they lowered the anxiety some students feel during math instruction. Several students who typically become frustrated during fraction lessons were smiling, participating, and eager to answer questions. Our ELL students especially benefited from being able to physically manipulate the pieces while connecting mathematical vocabulary to visual models. The materials created opportunities for meaningful discussions, peer support, and increased engagement across all learning levels.\r\n\r\n The next steps for our students are to continue using the fraction bars to deepen their understanding of equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and representing fractions on a number line. Students will also begin working on real-world problem-solving tasks where they explain their mathematical thinking verbally and in writing. We plan to incorporate more collaborative group projects where students create visual fraction models and present their strategies to classmates.
