The ChompSaw quickly became one of the most exciting tools in our STEM lab. When students first saw the ChompSaw, they were immediately curious about what it was and how it worked. While I tried explaining it beforehand, nothing compared to their reaction once they saw it in action. The precision, ease, and independence it gave them during the building process made them feel like real engineers and inventors. Students in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade were amazed by how easily they could cut cardboard pieces into the exact shapes and dimensions they needed for their prototypes. In fact, they were having so much fun measuring, designing, and cutting that before I knew it, they had gone through nearly all of our cardboard materials just experimenting and creating! Their excitement and curiosity were everything I hoped for with this tool.\r\n\r\nOur students used the ChompSaw across several Project-Based Learning units this semester. Second graders used it while designing cardboard prototypes for bee hotels before transitioning into the wood construction phase of their project. Having the opportunity to physically see and test the size of their structures beforehand helped them think more critically about dimensions and design choices. Third graders used the ChompSaw while building insulated lunchboxes during their heat energy transfer unit. After testing different materials and collecting data, students selected the best materials to either keep food warm or cold. One group discovered that although their box initially lost heat, the temperature later increased again, leading to meaningful discussions about insulation and heat transfer. Our 5th graders used the ChompSaw to create casings and structures for emergency and safety devices powered by circuits and Micro:bits. Students built fans, window alarms, and even a cardboard smart home with a door sensor and alert system that displayed warning messages when someone entered the house.\r\n\r\nAs we close out the 2025–2026 school year, some projects are complete while others are in their final stages, but the creativity sparked by this tool will continue far beyond this semester. My principal visited the STEM lab several times during these builds and shared how excited she is for what our students will create next year. She even joked that she wanted to jump in and start building herself! Thanks to your generosity, we know that the 2026–2027 school year is going to be filled with even more innovative, creative, and mind-blowing student projects. Thank you for believing in our students and investing in their ideas.","fullyFundedDate":1771174014469,"projectUrl":"project/safe-maker-tools-for-student-engineers/10058491/","projectTitle":"Safe Maker Tools for Student Engineers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Palmer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5044579_orig.jpg?crop=3000,3000,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757944514011","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5044579"},{"teacherId":7209678,"projectId":10005035,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom and helping place these meaningful books into the hands of my students. The stories have encouraged students to think more deeply about how their words and actions affect others while also strengthening important literacy skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, making connections, and responding to text.\r\nReading in our classroom is active, collaborative, and student centered. Students engage in turn and talks, reflection writing, partner discussions, and read aloud conversations where they share ideas, ask questions, and make personal connections to the characters and themes in the books. The reading passports have been especially exciting for students because they give them a sense of ownership and motivation as readers. Students enjoy tracking the books they read, reflecting on lessons learned, and celebrating their progress as readers throughout the year.\r\nSeveral students have formed strong connections to the stories because they see parts of themselves reflected in the characters and experiences within the books. One of the most rewarding moments has been hearing students use the language of kindness, empathy, and inclusion naturally during classroom conversations and peer interactions after reading these texts. The bilingual and diverse books have also sparked curiosity and thoughtful discussions about language, culture, and community. The new books, writing materials, and hands on resources have brought so much excitement and curiosity into our classroom. When students first saw the materials, they were immediately eager to explore the colorful texts, ask questions about the traditions and symbols, and share connections to celebrations in their own families and communities. The resources helped create an engaging environment where students were excited to learn about a culture and celebration that was new to many of them.\r\nWe have been using the books and informational texts during read alouds, literacy discussions, and research activities to help students build background knowledge and strengthen comprehension skills. One of the most memorable classroom moments was watching students work together to create Lunar New Year inspired art projects while discussing the meaning behind different symbols such as lanterns, dragons, and red envelopes. Students also used the journaling and writing materials to respond to what they learned through informational writing, reflections, and creative storytelling activities. These experiences helped students practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in authentic and engaging ways.\r\nAs we continue this unit, students will use the resources to deepen their understanding of traditions, compare cultural celebrations, and expand their writing through opinion and informational responses. These books have already made a meaningful impact on both reading and writing instruction in our classroom. Through interactive read alouds, class discussions, and writing lessons, students are learning how authors carefully choose words to create strong emotions, vivid imagery, believable characters, and powerful messages. The books have helped students understand that writing is more than simply putting words on paper. It is about communicating ideas, feelings, and experiences in meaningful ways.\r\nEach text has introduced important literacy and writing skills. Come On, Rain! has helped students explore sensory language and descriptive writing by noticing how the author paints pictures with words. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day has sparked rich conversations about emotions, voice, and personal narrative writing. Students were especially engaged with Hey, Little Ant because it encouraged them to think critically, defend opinions, and understand different perspectives through persuasive dialogue. Enemy Pie quickly became a classroom favorite as students discussed friendship, conflict, and problem solving while also learning how authors structure stories with clear problems and resolutions.\r\nReading in our classroom is highly interactive and student centered. Students actively turn and talk, make predictions, discuss character choices, and connect the stories to their own lives and writing. Several students who are usually hesitant to participate have become more confident during discussions because the stories are relatable and engaging. One of the most rewarding moments has been watching students independently apply techniques from the mentor texts into their own writing, whether through stronger descriptions, more detailed dialogue, or clearer story structure.
