Clay as a medium requires time - working time, time for drying, time for firing, time for glazing, time for the second firing. It is definitely not a process that one can start the night before the due date. That alone is a huge learning curve for this generation that is used to having the world immediately available at their fingertips! Working with clay forces students to be hands on learners with minimal technology distractions - if they let their pieces alone too long, they will become too dry to still be workable. They have to figure out how to work when the clay is ready to be worked, not making the clay wait until they are ready!\r\nComing in to this classroom last August, there was a zero dollar budget, so whatever was already in the classroom is what we used...but preparing for next school year with the generous support of donors like you is creating a lot of excitement already! My second year 3D Art classes are filling up and some students already have lists and sketches of all the work they plan to do in the near future - and they are so excited to know that they have the sculpture and clay tools they need to bring their ideas to life! Thank you so much for your amazing contribution to our 3D Art program!","fullyFundedDate":1778552420710,"projectUrl":"project/clay-carvers/10249085/","projectTitle":"Clay Carvers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. G.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3120790_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1778085834017","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/s-goebel"},{"teacherId":3120790,"projectId":9895596,"letterContent":"Once again, I find myself feeling so grateful for your support of the Visual Arts department! My students are more than just art students - they are dreamers, engineers, creators, designers, and makers. They embrace the opportunity to make things with their hands, and even to get dirty. They feel empowered to use tools to bring their visions into reality. \r\nIn many school settings, the opportunity to create actual physical work diminishes as students age and have a higher writing ability - their work turns into pages or notes instead of drawings and diagrams. They complete more work online instead of in the physical world. Many of them somehow believe that they will not be able to retain their artworks for this reason - they've simply forgotten how to create tangible products that are permanent in nature and should be taken home, used and enjoyed! Having the materials necessary for 200 students to create pieces is a daunting task, but one that I work towards throughout the school year, taking whatever free materials I can source, asking for donations, freecycling, recycling, and sometimes paying out of my own pocket. The joy on students' faces is always worth it when they see their own creation being unloaded from the kiln - their sense of awe that they have made something that will stand the test of time!","fullyFundedDate":1772642587753,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-creative-work/9895596/","projectTitle":"Hands On Creative Work!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. G.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3120790_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1778085834017","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/s-goebel"},{"teacherId":3120790,"projectId":9547836,"letterContent":"I don't think I can describe the magic that students feel when they see their glazed clay piece emerge from the kiln room! They are visibly affected - the pride and surprise is immediately evident on their entire person - they cannot believe that they have created something so bright, colorful, shiny, and permanent! Students are immediately motivated to make MORE - a special bowl, a gift for their friends or family, a tribute to their favorite show or character, or even bringing their own original character to life in 3D color! \r\nMy students regularly express that they come to school on a day that they really didn't feel like attending just because they didn't want their clay to dry out before they were finished building or they knew I was unloading or loading the kiln that day. Any extra motivation to increase attendance rates while also instilling a love for the arts is a win! When students become makers, they are also becoming engineers, architects, and problem-solvers! \r\nBeing able to have supplies ready for whatever their creative visions entail is a daunting task, but with help from generous donors like you, I'm able to say \"YES! I have that for you!\" Teenagers are used to hearing \"no\" a lot...I will always try to be the YES person that keeps them going! They do not know yet, but later in the year, these notebooks will become our review notebooks for their AP and IB exams. These review books are the key to the review and their success.
